We are looking for a great area to spend a long Memorial Day weekend within a reasonable drive (a few hours max) from Greenville.

Asheville North Carolina comes to mind. It is about an hour north of Greenville. Lots of nature things to see and do. Great downtown with many things to do.

Oops thought you were referring to Greenville South Carolina. I know nothing about Greenville North Carolina.
I would reccomend New Bern, NC. It is lovely smaller coastal town about an hour and a half from Greenville. It was once the capital and has a lot of hisoric charm.
