villages @ Ocean Hill

I just rented a house in Corolla can you tell me how the area is and what there is to do and see? I saw some posts the houses are close together and its very crowded but I already reserved it. Are there grocery stores close by and places to eat? What about the ocean, I will be going the week of Memorial Day, is it too cold for swimming that time of year? Any info would be appreciated, this will be my first visit to the OB. Thanks!

You will love Corolla. The houses there are very nice. There are a couple of very nice grocery stores. We especially liked Harris Teeter. You can sign up for a discount card before you shop. There are lots of places to eat. We especially liked Corolla Village BBQ. I think the ocean will be cold. We had access to Corolla Light amenenties and they were wonderful. We took a day trip to Ocracoke and also took a wild horse tour. We certainly didn%26#39;t get to do all the things we planned, but it was wonderful. We will just have to go back. There is the Currituck Light House in Corolla and the old Hunt Club. The sound is absolutely beautiful and peaceful. If you haven%26#39;t already, check out obxconnection.com and you will get lots of friendly advice from locals and seasoned obx visitors. We went ghost crab hunting (which was a blast) and I had a treasure hunt on the beach for the little ones in our group. The Corolla beaches are the best there. You won%26#39;t be disappointed.

Hi NCgirl222. As the OhLynne noted, the ocean will still be too cold for comfortable swimming. The area you are staying in can access shopping by bike or car. There will be crowds there for Memorial Day weekend, but I think it should thin out the rest of the week since school is still in session.

You have picked a good are to kick back and just enjoy the beautiful beach, sound and ocean.

Thanks for your feedback. I am sure I will love it. Is there any night life in that area or outdoor dining? Thanks again!

Where in Corolla did you rent and I can give you even more specific ideas? Are you bringing kids - what are their ages?

Our favorite restaurants: North Banks at Timbuck II (very casual, small restaurant), the Blue Point in Duck(not cheap but the BEST restaurant - must make reservations weeks ahead) - the best place to see a sunset with a drink in hand! Best pizza is from Pizzazz in Duck or at the shops at The Currituck Club. Best grocery store: Harris Teeter at the entrance to The Currituck Club and is open 24/7 and is great. If you want to shop in small, quaint stores go to Timbuck II. Take a tour to see the wild horses in Carova - the northern OBX. Be sure to visit the Currituck Lighthouse. Take a drive down to Jockeys Ridge and bring a kite. This is a must do experience. Play miniature golf in Kitty Hawk/Nags Head area. Even if you don%26#39;t have kids with you - be a kid again.

Visit the Wright Brothers monument.

Have fun! I love OBX in late May.

Oops - just noticed that you are at villages@ocean hill - all my recommendations apply.

Thanks for your reply. Everything sounds wonderful, cant wait to go! We will not have any little kids with us but we are all kids at heart! I hope we have good weather. Thanks everyone.

We visit the Villages at Ocean Hill very frequently, here%26#39;s our take-

Lots of amenities right in the development- 2 community pools which should be open my memorial day (although warm enough to swim may be iffy), easy access to the ocean, complete fitness center, tennis, basketball, Estuarine walkway to the sound, and access to the 4 wheel drive beaches.

Food Lion is the closest grocery store, but there are a few convenience stores within sight of the lighthouse. You will pass Harris Teeter on the way up to your home also.

There is a small shopping center across the road from the lighthouse- a few good restaurants (Donkey Hotay%26#39;s burritos, Cosmo%26#39;s Pizza) but no real night life. Any late night fun will be at Sundogs near the Food Lion, or Cafe Metropolis a few miles south.

Timbuck 2 is across the street from Food Lion, lots of choices for food %26amp; shopping.

Area attractions include the lighthouse, Whalehead club, and some sort of Nature Museum, all pretty much on the same grounds. The 4 wheel drive area is accessible on your own with the proper equipment, or you can take tours and/or rent vehicles to check it out yourself. You will frequently see wild horses in that area, with or without a guided tour.

Some of the other items mentioned (Jockey%26#39;s Ridge, the Nags Head area) are pretty far south. Good stuff, for sure, but could be an hour%26#39;s drive depending on traffic. Optimistically, you are 45 minutes from Jockey%26#39;s Ridge. Plan accordingly if yoiu head that way, there are way more restaurants, bars, stores, etc. as that area has been built up for longer the the northern beaches.

Enjoy!

Thanks Corolladay, I think we will have a blast. just thinking about the ocean is enough from me. I am originally from NY so I miss the ocean breeze and just relaxing with a good book!

The OBX version of night life is chasing ghost crabs on the beach . . . seriously.

In Ocean Hills, the night sky is awesome because it%26#39;s so dark. Around 10 pm on a clear night, darken the house lights throughout, grab a drink, a pair of binoculars, and a throw blanket and head out to your top deck to view stars like you%26#39;ve never seen before. We nearly always can see the Milky Way, numerous shooting stars, a few satellites and stars that seem to multiply the more you stare at them. This is one thing many visitors miss. If your neighborhood has too much light pollution making it hard to see stars, take a beach chair and head down to the sand - it%26#39;s always dark over the dune.
