Soundside Activities

We have usually stayed in Nags Head, and have rented ocean front homes. Last year we stayed in Avon, and the mosquitoes ate us alive! This year, we are thinking of staying in Corolla, in a soundfront home. We have 13 children in the family, ages 2-12. Can anyone tell me: 1)do people swim in the sound? I haven%26#39;t read any descriptions of rental homes that discuss swimming in the sound. 2)what communities are best for the ocean to be w/in walking distance? 3)any communities with bike trails for the kids? 4) are the mosquitoes bad on the soundside?

Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks.

I would not swim in the sound-you will encounter snakes by the shoreline. Many people enjoy windsurfing, crabbing, and kayaking. The nice part about the sound is the fabulous sunsets.

Most of the communities on the oceanside of the road are not much further than 3 or 4 blocks. Some offer a parking lot close to the beach for unloading beach stuff-nice when you have small children as they seem to require so much!

Corolla Light has trails and there are trails on most parts of the main road-but I am not sure I would trust the kids out there alone.

Mosquitoes can be bad everywhere, just depends on the time of year and the frequency of rain.
