Last month to see the turtles

August is the last month of the year that you can visit the turtles at the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, aka, the Turtle Hospital.

The Turtle Hospital gets very busy and the lines are long, so if you are going to see the turtles this month, I suggest you get there early. Volunteers there take you behind the scenes and to see the turtles that are recovering from illness or injury.

There is also a gift shop there.

The Turtle Hospital is open from 2-4 p.m. every day except Wednesday and Sunday, the gift shop is also open during those hours, although, sometimes it closes if there is a turtle emergency. The phone number for the hospital is 328-3377.

It is also the last month for Turtle Talks, which takes place at the Surf City Community Center, located on JH Batts Road, which is the road off Hwy 210 between Docksider and Gilligan鈥檚.

Turtle Talks take place every Wednesday from 3:45 鈥?4:45 p.m. The program is very informative and appropriate for both children and adults.

If you can%26#39;t make it to see the turtles or hear the Turtle Talks, you can keep up with what is going on with turtles on Topsail at the Turtle Hospital%26#39;s website http://www.seaturtlehospital.org/ .

Last month to see the turtles

I was researching Bald Island but I think you have to join the conservancy to take a night walk to see the turtles. Where is Surf City? I assume it%26#39;s on the Atlantic Coast. Is it anywhere near Bald Island or Wilmington? This might be a great option for us instead of Bald Island. Thank you

Last month to see the turtles

Surf City is North of Wilmington. It is on Topsail Island which runs between Jacksonville NC and Wilmington NC.

The Turtle Hospital is south of Surf City in the town of Topsail Beach.

I don%26#39;t know what other turtle activities they promote that would allow you to interact with them. I do know that they take note of nest sites and fence them off. When we were there last summer, another visitor was discussing the nest near their house and was asking the volunteers when it was due to hatch, but the staff there really didn%26#39;t want to say much probably to discourage people from interfering with the nest.

Suggest looking at their website.

The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, a.k.a., the turtle hospital, is located on Topsail Island in Topsail Beach. It is open to the public from mid-june through August from 2 to 4 p.m. every day except Sundays and Wednesdays, or if there is a turtle type of emergency.

During the hatching season you might come upon a nest at night where there are people from the turtle hospital nest sitting. They do not mind if you sit there with them in anticipation of a hatching, but you have to play by their rules - no flash photos, no flashlights, etc.

The website is seaturtlehospital.org

Its best to wait until they release the Turtles back in the water at the south end,This usually happens around the second week in June.Theres not much to see at the Hospital other than a few Turtles swimming around in some tanks. Its better to see them swim back into the Ocean on their own. There is always a crowd of about 2,000 People cheering them on.
