Best half-way point between Pittsburgh, PA and OBX??

We are traveling to Avon in June from Pittsburgh, PA. We want to drive for about 4-5 hours, spend the night, and pick up the rest of the drive in the am. Can anyone recommend a good ';half-way'; point for us to do this? Thanks! We have never been to the OBX before, so this is all new to us!

We travel to the OBX from Port Allegany, Pa. and usually break up the trip by staying overnight in Suffolk, Va. From there you can get to the Outer Banks in the A.M. before the traffic builds up.

I guess that depends on what way you are going. Personally I would recommend avoiding DC and take 81 south from what ever way you are coming but I m guessing Richmond area might be your half way point We like to go to Va beach for a night but I can get there in less then 4 hrs and then Outer Banks is not more then 2 ½ hrs away. You can look at this site and click on getting there from the north and find the way you might like

Richmond is closer to halfway than Suffolk. The computer states that it takes five hours and sixteen minutes to Richmond from Pittsburgh. I don%26#39;t know how it narrows it down to the sixteen minutes but Suffolk would be about another hour and a half.

Another vote for using I-81.

Depending what part of Pgh you are coming from, go through Morgantown WVA via 79 south, and then head East on 68, or pick up 70 via Breezewood and then make your way to 81 in Hagerstown.

Then 81 to 64.

Charlottesville, VA may be a good stop. Google Maps has that as 5 hours and 22 minutes via the route above (which is the recommended route). Then 6.5 hours for the rest of the trip.

We have always taken 81 to 66 East to 17. 17 will take you to 95 near Fredericksburg. We then take 95 S. to 460 near Petersburg.

Been going to Avon since early 80%26#39;s, I would advise going more than half-way then leave early the next day to avoid traffic on the weekend. We almost always go to the Williamsburg area stay overnight and drive to Avon after breakfast the next day. (early if the weekend). Williamsburg has many motels. Buy gas before you cross Currituck sound, Avon has a Food Lion for groceries. Go to hatteras harbor to see the fishing boats come in 4:30-5:00 pm ferry to Ocracoke is a good day lunch at Howards, the Breakwater in Hatteras is a great special dinner (not cheap). If you have a 4WD vehicle you can drive on the beach at Buxton. We are going to Avon May 11 for a week. Again Aug 1 for 3 weeks I hope you enjoy your trip.

Thanks for your advice everyone! I truly appreciate it. We have never been to the OBX before, so we are really looking forward to it!
