Looking for the best non-commercialized area to stay...

Greetings

I%26#39;m looking into planning a trip for a week in July/August, and was thinking of perhaps the Outer Banks since I have not been since I was a child. I%26#39;m sure things have changed dramatically since then, so i need help so i dont end up staying in what may be an area filled with chain restaurants and strip malls.

About us and what we are looking for : My wife and I are both late 20%26#39;s, we are more laid back and will not be looking to a area that is crammed with people. I would like would to rent a home/condo on the beach, be able to stock up of some really good groceries and beverages, hang at a nice pristine beach all day, then go back to the house/condo and cook up a fabulous meal and enjoy some beverages, preferably with a great view to take in. It would also be nice to have a great non-chain restaurant or two close by so we can go out to dinner a couple nights as well. Not sure if this is a tall order or not, seeing how its been so long since i have been there, when it was a nice quaint area.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Looking for the best non-commercialized area to stay...

I have been coming here since 1985 and it has built up a lot since then. The Duck Corolla area is all huge 5-10 bedroom homes, but it is not as commercial there as it is in the Kitty Hawk to Nags Head area. You might like Avon or Hatteras or even Ocracoke Island.

Looking for the best non-commercialized area to stay...

Corolla sounds like the perfect area for you and your family. We will be making our 5th trip in august.

If you want a beach that is never crammed with people, consider going a little further south and go to Topsail.

It hits about all of your prerequisites.

Ocracoke is a good choice-No chain restaurants at all on the island.

You may also like the Hatteras area-avoid Nag%26#39;s Head and Duck-not as quaint as it used to be.

I have to disagree with the Corolla suggestion. It is about the most built up section of the north beaches!

I%26#39;ve been going to the Outer Banks for over 35 years, and, well, LOL, it has changed a LOT. But it is still a nice beach vacation, even though it no longer has that wonderful wild, untamed feel to it. You just have to sort of brace yourself for the disappointment.

That said, there are plenty of houses and condos for rent, and lots of groceries stores to buy good food from, and of course plenty of restaurants.

I%26#39;d suggest you banish your childhood memories and just go and have fun. That%26#39;s what I do anyway! :)

I would definitely check out Ocracoke. It%26#39;s a longer drive, but well worth it. We go every year because it has a beautiful beach (NO construction on the beach - so it%26#39;s spectacular) and a very laid back atmosphere. We are in your same age range, and we find that it is truly a vacation - we don%26#39;t bring our laptops, turn our cell phones off, and really relax. We pack a bag full of books, a deck of cards, and tons of sunscreen. :) There are some nice restaurants for dinner out (we had a fantastic anniversary dinner at the Back Porch 2 years ago, and Howard%26#39;s Pub is a favorite of ours), and there is not a chain anything on the island. Have a wonderful trip - I am jealous! :)

Celebrating Anniversary Stay

We are wanting to stay some where for a night for our Anniversay that is coming up soon. Would love a place that has a Spa but any suggestions on some place special would be good. Also, things are tight with money so that plays a big part. We live in Asheboro so surrounding triad would be good.

Thanks

Celebrating Anniversary Stay

Hello again - the combination of spa and a budget will be tricky if not impossible. Greensboro has Grandover Resort - a decent spa but pricey for the hotel. I stayed there when it first opened. Nice, rooms, good food, OK service.

You are a reasonable drive to Pinehurst. Their spa is wonderful We usually stay at the Homewood Suites in Pinehurst - just a mile or two from the spa and much less expensive than Pinehurst resort. Check out that combination - it works for us! Best wishes.

First trip in June; staying at Pompous Pelican

Anyone know anything about this place?

We%26#39;re staying in June and will be fishing, golfing, swimming, etc. Any fishing or golf recommendations would also be welcomed.

thanks

First trip in June; staying at Pompous Pelican

Not sure of you place but there are several golf courses just north of there a fishing pier close too if you have 4 wheel drive just south of there you can drive on the beach to fish.

Not knowing your fishing experience you can look at this site for new comers it should answer all you questions click on salt water fishing for new comers also checking into a local tackle shop will help on current conditions and baits to use.

First trip in June; staying at Pompous Pelican

Hi SMC477,

Just returned from Easter at the Pompous Pelican. Great House. 6 bedrooms, 6 baths, Great Decks right on the ocean. Also was pleasently surprised to pick up the internet on my laptop. Best place is from the kitchen table.

Note: If you like to watch TV in your bedroom, there is NO TV in the Master Bedroom so you may want to take one :(

Asheville: Looking for Advice on Art Galleries, Craft Shops

Me and my girlfriend will be visiting my mom who lives near Knoxville, TN next week. She%26#39;ll be turning 70 and she loves all types of crafts, especially quilt shops and scrapbooking stores. I was thinking about taking them to Asheville for a day trip on Friday. It%26#39;s been about four or five years since I%26#39;ve been to Asheville. When I was a kid, I often visited Biltmore, but never really explored the downtown area. Now I understand it%26#39;s really the happening art scene and I would really like to check it out because I%26#39;m a professional photographer and love art galleries.

Here%26#39;s my problem. While my girlfriend and I like the art scene, it%26#39;s not my mom%26#39;s cup of tea. She%26#39;s more into old-fashioned crafts like quilting and sewing. The type of things you would find at Dollywood or Gatlinburg. From everything I%26#39;ve read, downtown Asheville and the Riverside Arts district would be perfect for me and my girlfriend, but I fear my mom would be bored to tears. My question...are there enough craft shops in downtown Asheville that my mom would enjoy? Or could we maybe go somewhere else (within Asheville, of course) to make her happy? I%26#39;m trying to strike the right balance between ';arts'; and ';crafts'; so that it%26#39;s not a wasted trip across the mountains. Is it possible?????? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Asheville: Looking for Advice on Art Galleries, Craft Shops

How about the Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Asheville? I think downtown Asheville maybe too ';art';-sy and not enough craftsy for Mom. Another idea would be New Morning Gallery in Biltmore Village and then take them to lunch at Corner Kitchen which is in one of the original BV houses that used to be a residence.

Asheville: Looking for Advice on Art Galleries, Craft Shops

There are several great traditional crafts shops downtown. There are a couple in the Grove Arcade that are really special. There is a walking tour of the arts, crafts and boutique stores in downtown Asheville at asheville-mountain-magic.com/asheville-art-g… . Browse through the walk and you will get a really good idea of what the different art and craft galleries offer. If your Mom can%26#39;t walk that far, you will know where to park as the shops are shown by street. Definitely visit the Blue Spiral 1 Gallery for it has both art and crafts - including quilts. Even though most offerings are modern, everyone that I take there loves the quilts. I have lots of visiting friends that are into quilts, and even those that are very traditional admire the quilts at Blue Spiral. There is also a quilt gallery in the River Arts District. I forget its name, but you can find it here asheville-mountain-magic.com/river-arts-dist… Do call ahead to make sure it will be open as the studios in the River Arts District all keep different hours. Have fun!

transportation to high point

me %26amp; hubby flying in to charlotte airport, we need to get to High Point, what kinds of transportation is there

transportation to high point

There might be a van shuttle but I%26#39;m not sure. You would either need to rent a car or take Amtrak. There are 3 trains ( usually) one in the morning, one in the early evening and one in the middle of the night. The train station is on the other side of town from the airport - you%26#39;d have to take a taxi. Best wishes.

transportation to high point

Hold up - are you coming in for the furniture market? Their website says they are operating shuttles from the CLT airport to HP - have checked there?

thanks for all your help, trains don%26#39;t work with our flight arrival, i%26#39;ll look into the shuttel for the furniture fair.

  • Looking for a Cabin

We are looking for a cabin that sleeps 6 with an amazing view or on a rushing creek. I%26#39;ve been on a bunch of rental websites but was hoping someone knew of a great place to take teenagers. Looking for that cabin feel. Knotty pine, fire place, porch with a great view...Any help will be greatly appreciated. Oh, we will be heading up there the last week of June.

I like to recommend Boyd Mountain Cabins in Maggie. Although I%26#39;ve never stayed in one of their cabins, I%26#39;ve met the Boyd family and been on their property several times. It is also a Christmas tree farm, and is very beautiful.

    Looking for a Cabin

In the past, we have rented Lands End and Point of View cabins with Smoky Falls Real Estate. Each has great views....they are somewhat close to each other on the top of a mountain. Pretty isolated up there, but we loved it, and also had teenagers with us. We have rented from Smoky Falls several times and have always had a good experience. Both cabins are up on steep dirt roads, but are no problem in a regular car.

Look up Premier Vacation Rentals LLc. They have a website with 90 properties listed and all have pictures. I%26#39;m sure they can find you something.

    Surf Condos?

Can anyone tell me what the Surf Conodos are like? The price seems great and the pictures and location look good but I know how that can be. Thanks for any info.

    Surf Condos?

Surf Condos are allright,They are centrally located in Surf City and right on the beach the only bad thing is the STEPS.If you have bad legs you better get aunit on the first floor.

    Surf Condos?

Thanks. Are there any other condos units located right in Surf City?

There are a couple of Hotel Condo units,Tiffanys is one and I can%26#39;t remember the other.I will look today.

Other Condo complexes are in North Topsail beach.

The Villa Capriani, St Regis and the Ship watch Villas and Town homes as well as the Dunes are all located in North Topsail Beach.

The Surf is in Surf City. It is much quieter in North Topsail beach. But Surf city is where the action is.

    My Favorite Time Of Summer!

This Sunday!...It All begins with Shark Week..I love it!The Beaches Are all clear again.

    My Favorite Time Of Summer!

    LOL

With the amount of people visiting our shores this summer and enjoying themselves, I don%26#39;t anticipate a TV series keeping them away.

    My Favorite Time Of Summer!

This topic got me thinking about what time of summer is my favorite. Early, mid and late summer all have their benefits so it%26#39;s really hard to choose.

I do, however, really like August for reasons that are only slightly beach related. The great meteor showers, the Perseid, takes place in August. If you%26#39;ve never star gazed from the beach, you%26#39;ve really missed something. The stars are bright and clear. Add a shooting star or two every minute and it%26#39;s spectacular.

August also has the shrimp festival, the SF king mackerel tournament, the fishing%26#39;s good, the sea turtles begin to hatch, area football begins, and the water temperature is as warm as bathwater; I could go on and on.

What%26#39;s your favorite time of summer?

Labor Day Monday ,When I see that caravan of cars heading off the Island to I-40 and beyound.I know Football Season is right around the corner.

    Conniecat,

When is the best month to view the sea turtles and what location? Thanks

My favorite time is early September. The air and the ocean water are still warm as well as the pools. The fishing is usually great. The swimming is awesome and at times the beaches are so quite you feel like they are all yours.

I have had good luck with Joe Lamb Realty, Nag%26#39;s Head Reality and Carolina Designs. It has been several years since we have used a rental though.

  • Easter car trip to asheville

We are considering a road trip to asheville and area in Mid April. I am seeking suggestions on activities, especially bicycle trails as well as other seasonal or year round events. I like to stay in nice. economical hotels or B and B%26#39;s. Again, looking for your recommendations. Thanks!

    Easter car trip to asheville

Please specify road or trail biking...there are great rides for both, but at different places.

Asheville has several very good B%26amp;B%26#39;s, but I wouldn%26#39;t call any of them ';economical';.

    Easter car trip to asheville

we like to ride rail to trails. Do you know of any? Can you recommend any good quality but economical hotels in the area? Thank you for your time.

The closest rails-to-trails project I know of is The Virginia Creeper, an outstanding trail about 2 hours north of Asheville near Abingdon , VA. If you come down from Michigan by cutting NW to SE across Ohio and head south on I-77 / West VA Turnpike, you hit I-81 about 25 miles from Abingdon, VA and drive right past the northern trail head. It is a really great ride and there are some nice, relatively affordable B%26amp;B%26#39;s and hotels in and around Abingdon and Galax, VA. .

Closer to Asheville, there are some fairly level rides south of town near the Mills River in Pisgah National Forest, and the trails at Bent Creek near the NC Arboretum are very popular with hard core single track riders.

The Homewood in Asheville is highly recommended and a bit separated from the Biltmore house / Biltmore Village, which will be very busy during the spring Festival of Flowers in mid April.

Thank you for that suggestion. I will look inot that further . Would you suggest avoiding the Biltmore during this season, I had read about it and was trying to decide whether or not to plan to go there.

Absolutely go to the Biltmore Estate, just dont stay there. Plan to go early and spend more time outside than inside. The grounds and gardens are amazing in springtime, even moreso than the house, winery, etc. Explore discounts on tickets through AAA.

I don%26#39;t know what general route you are planning for your road trip, but if feasible I highly recommend taking a scenic driving tour of the western North Carolinian Appalachian Mountains taking stops along the way to see some of the coolest natural areas in the region. Top scenic drives that might fit your trip include the Cherohala Skyway, Blue Ridge Parkway, Mountain Waters Parkway, and Newfound Gap Road.

    Kristian

Check out this link for a rails and trails option. They are a very reputable company and are sure to give you a great experience.

    http://www.wildwaterrafting.com/jeeptours.php

For accommodations, I would check out Brookstone Lodge which is a new hotel in town. www.BrookstoneLodgeAsheville.com. They are opening in the beginning of April so you are sure to get a great clean room. :o) They are also very close to Biltmore Estate (on the same road) so that may be a big convenience factor for you as well.

  • First Trip to Nags head

My family and I are making our first trip to Nags Head June 6. We are traveling by car from Cincinnati, Ohio. My husband and I are traveling with a 1 and 4 year old. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,

    First Trip to Nags head

Hi brickbeats and welcome to the forum! It has been a long time since I had a child that young, but I would guess that you would not want to drive straight through. Are you planning on breaking the trip up with an overnight stop?

I would suggest videos, games, books, toys, etc., to keep them occupied. Stop and have a meal or snack to break it up for them if they become really restless.

    MB

    First Trip to Nags head

Do you mean what to do with the kids on the road trip or when you get there? We made the trip last summer. The kids did better than grandpa! Of course, Grandpa %26amp; Grandma drove straight through and the rest of the gang with the little ones stopped in Richmond. However, they did say they wished they had gone on and just made the rest of the trip.

Once you get there, lots of fun things for the little ones. Someone suggested to us to take a baby pool and an umbrella to the beach and let them run from the ocean to the pool with a bucket and fill up the baby pool and let them play in that. We had a treasure hunt for the kids and also hunted for ghost crabs at night. There is a pirate adventure and an aquarium nearby, as well.

    4x4 beaches

looking into the outer banks as a vacation this year the 4x4 beaches sound kind of cool something different. How far out are they from any towns where I would be able to find food stores and gift shops or mini golf for kids?

    4x4 beaches

It depends which 4x4 area you are in. Swan Beach is about 6 miles from Corolla where the road ends and Carova is about 11 miles. You have to drive the beach to get there and there are no roads. You need to have a 4x4 and not some all wheel drive type car or you will get stuck. You are apt to get stuck anyway so have a heavy tow rope, shovel, cell phone, and make each trip to town count because you won%26#39;t want to make several trips per day.

    4x4 beaches

Other forum members have agreed with me when I have responded to these type questions.

1.) The 4X4 area is not safe for kids to be playing outside of the house. Way too much traffic.

2.) Traffic noise late at night.

3.) High tides can strand you inside your house.

If you don%26#39;t mind these safety problems, go for it.

Kids like Nags Head or Kill Devil Hills. South Nags Head is nice too. Less crowds.

As far as I%26#39;m concerned, the 4X4 beaches are annoying. You want to lay in the middle of a road? Then you might like it.

If the 4x4 area is annoying, please don%26#39;t venture up there. We certainly don%26#39;t need vacationing folks with attitude.

It is a great area for kids. Much more peaceful than some posters might lead you to believe. Only suggestion is to avoid the 4 weeks in July and first 2 in August. The OBX strains under the congestion for that period of the year.

OBX- Oceanfront House-what to look for ?

We are looking to rent a house/duplex,for a week, on the beach,or very close.Only will be 6 of us. A 5 y.o. is one of them so if poss. a community pool or the like. August, maybe first two weeks, dates r flexible. Have 4x4 if we need to go more south. Looking 2k range , but also flex.Just don%26#39;t want a condo.Any leads on a great rental/real estate co.? thx

OBX- Oceanfront House-what to look for ?

You lost me. Do you want a house or duplex? I have seen some duplex homes that are oceanfront but not too many. 4x4 would be needed if you go ';UP'; to the northern 4x4 beach north of Corolla. Corolla down to Hatteras you won%26#39;t need a 4x4 to get to the house, they all have roads and driveways. $2k for oceanfront is going to be tough if it has a pool, you need to start hunting because the good stuff books up early.

Oceanfront with a community pool will be hard to find, homes 1 lot back from the ocean with a comm pool are easier to find but you will more likely be 2-4 lots back, but that will fit your needs better anyway.

Try 800-552-6257 ext 230 and let her help you.

OBX- Oceanfront House-what to look for ?

You might give the listings in Corolla Light a look...several different styles to choose from as well as locations as far as distance from the ocean. We felt like we had a good price when we stayed at Lazy Daze in Corolla Light through www.Villagerealtyobx.com (or google lazy daze corolla light). Back from the beach but oceanside of the road...and ocean views actually. Nice sandy lane for your walk to the beach. Just one of many great places though. Corolla Light also has smaller houses, townhouses, etc. Just enough to do and things for the kids.

We can do a house, but, also saw some duplex on the beach. We want on the beach, oceanfront. Might have to go more South, towards Camp Lej. Like u said , pretty much booked. So we will see. We did find this..http://www.joelambjr.com/rental/house.html?ID=402

That%26#39;s Tiller%26#39;s house. It is actually about 1 block from where I live. It is right on the beach and about 1/4 mile from Avalon pier. Good ocean views but the house is not super modern or fancy, pretty basic but it rents well. I sit on my deck and watch the dolphins swim by and this house is even closer.

You%26#39;d be very hard pressed to find a oceanfront home for $2,000 in August. Try www.joelambjr.com and look around. You can get a very nice home on the beach road across the street from the beach with a private pool in the Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills area. Towards the end of August will be cheaper. good Luck.

    EYE KNOW !!!! uggg...Still looking,,also trying VRBO..

    End of Aug. won%26#39;t work%26gt;%26gt;%26gt; Kidds starte%26#39;skool%26#39; . :)

Boy, one more whopper of a storm or hurricane and that house (and those along there with it) are in the ocean!

Look down on Topsail Island and see what you can find. The island is narrow, so even if you get second row, you are still very close to the beach.

The drive down there is not that bad. You can do interstate almost all the way. Via I-40.

    jwhiteree

Come on, you have no idea what you are talking about. The oceanfront homes in Kill Devil and Nags Head have years and years left on them. There are no huge dunes that the homes are perched up on to collapse like in South Nags Head. I was here during Izzy in 2003, there were a few homes lost in Kitty Hawk but they were the old ones that sat right on the ground. Those up on pilings let the water go under with minimal damage.

    Topsail Reef

I read that this complex doesn%26#39;t have a pool again. Is this a result of a hurricane? My concern is the area has been devasated by one. I have read some posts about the area having damamge but being rebuilt. Can anyone clarify? Also, is Surfs Condo a nice complex?

    Thanks.

    Topsail Reef

The Reef does not have any pools. Any hurricane damage has been repaired and you wouldn%26#39;t know that there had been any damage except for the pools being gone. They recently trucked in sand there.

I think the Surf Condos is nice. Other condos you might want to consider that have pools are the St. Regis, Shipwatch and the Villa Capriani. There are other nice places, too, those are just the ones I can think of right off hand.

    Topsail Reef

The Villa Capriani, St Regis and the Ship watch Villas and Town homes as well as the Dunes are all located in North Topsail Beach. They are all much much nicer than the reef.

Yes, the pool at the reef was destroyed by Hurricane Ophelia a few years ago. The pool was recently covered over with the trucked in sand. It will not be rebuilt.

The Island with the exception of the Reef pool has recovered form the Hurricane damage. There were several homes past the reef that were condemned. They have recently been removed. The Island looks great.

The Surf is in Surf City. It is much quieter in North Topsail beach. But Surf city is where the action is.

Check out this unit at the Villa

I spent 11 years in the Villa and I can say it is one of the best places to stay on the NC Coast. The pools are great and well maintained and the beaches are clean white and pretty much deserted.Once youre there there is no need to leave. If you crave quiet and solitude this is it if you want a Zoo or Circus come on down to Surf City.

I would love to stay there but it is out of my price range. I only need a one bedroom but still too much. Thanks for your input!

  • Beware! Holiday Inn Express Gastonia

We just got back from a trip to Florida and would like to warn fellow travelers to stay away from the Holiday Inn Express in Gastonia, NC. Having read the ratings and reviews from Tripadvisor, we expected a quality hotel when we booked. Our room was small, aged, dark and depressing. The free hot breakfast was a joke! Not even any eggs and when we arrived for breakfast shortly before closing, the various trays of food were almost empty, and the person in charge of the breakfast bar was already cleaning up! A HUGE disappointment.

Polar Express Train Trip 2008, Bryson City, North Carolina

I couldn%26#39;t believe how lame this was! We brought our whole family there. We are from Texas, so we flew to Charlotte, picked some family there, and those who flew in from DC and drove the 4 hours.

We stayed at the Hemlock Inn, which was lovely, but the train ride was horrible. One of the seats collapsed, the hot chocolate was awful and this was the exact comment from one of my grandchildren as we pull up and stop at ';THE NORTH POLE';: ';MIMI, WHAT ARE ALL THOSE CARS DOING AT THE NORTH POLE';?

I looked out the window and there were a dozen or so cars waiting to cross the road!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had gone all out for this one, including designing matching sweatshirts for everyone that said:

    ';The Polar Express, 2008';.

We had taken the Williams, Arizona trip a few years back with our other grandchilden that live in Phoenix, and thought the experience was wonderful.

    Bryson City was anything but!

Unfortunately for those grandchildren that were of the age where ';believe'; was on the fence, this trip put them on the WRONG side of the fence.

    Restaurant suggestion for this weekend

we own a vacation home in Nags Head and have made it our duty to try as many restaurants as possible. Our all time favorite is Kill devil Grill (KDG) It looks like a diner from the outside, however the food inside is incredible. Daily specials (fresh catch of the day etc.)';rock%26#39; or stick with the menu. Our favorites are crab cake caesar salad country chicken salad, roasted chicken. Wednesdays is half price bottles of wine. If you prefer a fancier place the best we found is 1587 in Manteo. Beautiful setting, great food and a cute little town to walk around after. We just returned home yesterday from Nags Head. I want to go back now! Anyway - we enjoyed the Black Pelican the most. In fact, we went for lunch 2 days because everything was so delicious! Very relaxed atmosphere, casual dress - jeans, shorts, anything goes.

    First Time to Asheville Area

Will be spending four days in the Ashville and Black Mountain area in mid-May. I%26#39;m looking for suggestions on places to stay and eat and things to do.

For places to say and eat, we%26#39;re looking for either a cabin or bed and breakfast type place but nothing real expensive. As far as dining, we like the local mom and pop type places.

For things to do, we like outdoor activities, so any tips on rafting outfitters would be helpful.

    Thanks,

    First Time to Asheville Area

have you checked into vrbo.com for cabin rentals? As far as restaurants...you might want to start by looking at chowhound.com ...what comes immediately to mind would be Red Rocker Inn in Black Mountain and Moose Cafe near the Farmer%26#39;s Market in S. Asheville.

    Sonny's Grill

I am devastated to learn that Sonny%26#39;s Grill in downtown Blowing Rock is closed as of today. Written up in Bon Apetit and Gourmet this was one of the home of best greasy burgers and piping hot french fries, anywhere. It was also a good place to enjoy breakfast and take in the local gossip. Will somebody please say it aint so.

    Sonny's Grill

I hope that you are wrong. We were just there and the it was too cold to venture into town. Will return soon and if we venture into town, I will check ti out.

Does not make sense. They are always busy! Always!

    Sonny's Grill

Hello from Blowing Rock! I am sorry to report that Sonny%26#39;s is closed. The building where it was is empty and vacated. I have heard 2 stories and will keep asking. One, the landlord asked much to much rent for a new contract and the second, someone promintent in the business passed away.

I will keep asking until I find a definate answer and let you know.

We are staying at a condo at Ocean Dunes in Kure Beach rented to us by Atlanticshores Reality. Does anybody know anything about this condo? We have 4 children ages 8-16. Was Kure beach a good decision or will tehy be bored? Any suggestions? Thanks

    ocean dunes condos

Hi. We too are staying there at Easter time. We have always stayed in Carolina beach which is a few miles north of Kure Beach. The aquarium at Fort Fisher is about a mile from where you will be. Not too much night life, but a great family vacation. The Deckhouse in Carolina Beach is the best restaurant we have ever eaten in. Very fresh, very reasonably priced. All in all, great family vacation. Your teenagers might like a day/evening in Wilmington (the college town).

Thanks for your reply. I hope to see a post from you after your vacation with a (hopefully good) review! :)

    Hi,

Don%26#39;t know much about Ocean Dunes, but Carolina, Kure and Fort Fisher all run together. Your family will really enjoy the aquarium and might also enjoy taking the Ferry over to Southport which is a quaint litte seaside town. If you really want to venture out head toward wrightsville beach and have dinner at the Blue Water Grill that is right on the intercoastal water way. Excellent food and a casual but nice dining expereince. Enjoy your trip!

The ferry sounds pretty neat. How far away is Wrightville beach? How much does is cost? We definately want to do the aquarium and Fort Fisher. Thanks for the advice!

This is a great area for families.

We use to take our kids there every summer when the boys were little. We are thinking of going back to Carolina Beach this summer. Anyway, spencernurse, your family might also enjoy going to the USS North Carolina in Wilmington. You can tour the battleship. Very interesting. Do go on the ferry to Southport. Fun for everyone.

Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach are maybe 20-30 minutes from Kure.

    Have fun!

Is this the Civil war battlefield area that you%26#39;re talking about? My husband is a civil war buff and said that there is a battlefiel in this area.

I was wondering if you%26#39;ve gone to Kure Beach yet. We are going in June and will be staying directly across the highway from you (in The Riggings) I took my first vacation to Carolina Beach when I was thirteen and have been going every since (Now 35). Just in case you%26#39;ve not gone yet, Ft. Fisher is the Civil War battlefield, about 1 mile south of Ocean Dunes. There is a museum there in a brick building just off the road. Farther south from there is the ferry ride across the Cape Fear River, and costs $5 a car last time we went. Near there is the Aquarium. The USS Battleship NC is in Wilmington, about 30 minutes north of Ocean Dunes. A helpful suggestion: Use Dow Road, which is a bypass around all the red lights and traffic of Carolina Beach. it gets you from the northern tip of the island to the bottom in a lot less time than if you stay on Hwy 421 S the whole way. As you drive onto Pleasure Island, pass Food Lion at the bottom of the hill and turn right soon after and follow Dow Rd to the end, then turn right back onto Hwy 421 South. This really saves a lot of hassle. If you%26#39;ve already taken your trip, sorry! but maybe someone else can benefit??

Thanks a lot for your suggestions. We are going the last week of june. I just printed your post and put it in with our maps. It%26#39;s amazing how much just the little bit of hints really help! Thanks again.

Hi spencernurse! I, too, am from Spencer and have been enjoying the Kure Beach area since I was tiny. My husband and I take our 14-year old and one of her friends every year, and it%26#39;s a great place to relax. Like an earlier post said, not much nightlife -- but with 2 teenagers, I don%26#39;t mind at all. If you or your husband like to fish, the pier fishing at Kure Beach is excellent. Ocean Dunes is a great place to stay, especially with all the pools and indoor activities (if it rains.) My family is going the third week in June.

Thanks, Spencermom! Actually, I%26#39;m from Elmira, NY. (My last name is Spencer) Going into the unknown is always scary, so it was nice to hear that Kure Beach is what we are expecting in our vacation. ( Quiet, relaxing, sand and water) . Have a nice 1 yourselves!

    Kitty Hawk area motels

My husband %26amp; I want to spend 2 days at Kitty Hawk. Need a motewl. Doesn%26#39;t have to be fancy. Does anyone know about the Tar Heels Motel in Nags Head or rthe ocean Beach hotel?

Wilmington vs. Charleston: Memorial Day '09

    Fellow Travelers,

I have a 5-day weekend for Memorial Day. Little Lady %26amp; I are looking to hit the beach. Both Wilmington %26amp; Charleston are within a similar drive. We are in our mid-20s %26amp; looking for a quiet/secluded/romantic beach during the day, but a vibrant nightlife once the sun goes down. Here are a few options I%26#39;ve found so far:

    1. Wrightsville Beach

    2. Carolina Beach

    3. Ft. Fisher

    ...vs...

    Charleston

    Your thoughts?

Much appreciated %26amp; thank you for your time!

Wilmington vs. Charleston: Memorial Day '09

Wilmington is a neat place, but doesn%26#39;t come close to comparing to Charleston. The beaches are about the same, but the nightlife and downtown history can%26#39;t be touched. Try the Mill%26#39;s house downtown Charleston.

Wilmington vs. Charleston: Memorial Day '09

    Agree.

Wrightsville Beach is not as commercialized as others, but in my mind it still does not compare with Charleston for romance, walking, sightseeing, quiet, food, etc. But be aware that around Memorial Day the Spoleto festival will also be going on. That will add to crowds and people but also is a great time to go if you like arts, music etc., for something to do.

Other considerations: Bald Head Island near Wrightsville is accessible only by ferry with no cars allowed. Not sure how easy it would be to get a rental for Memorial Day.

Might also consider staying outside of Charleston on one of the beaches - Seabrook or Kiawah.

Charleston is what you want (and I live near Wilmington).

Bald Head Island, mentioned in previous reply, has no nightlife, or much else, but it%26#39;s quiet since there are no cars and only access is by ferry.

You should check out Topsail Beach which is just 30 minutes north of Wilmington, it%26#39;s a great place to get away from it all, the beaches are wide and it%26#39;s not too built up.

Charleston, most definately. It is such a romantic historical city with many historical B%26amp;B%26#39;s. A very nice hotel is Charleston Mills House. You can walk to all the hot spots from your hotel.

I love Wilmington, lived there for 5-6 years and lived about 45 minutes from there for an additional eight years.

If you want a romantic/secluded beach during the day, I can tell you Wrightsville Beach is going to be a mad house!! So seclusion there is a no go.

As far as Ft. Fisher and Carolina Beach, they are alright but I feel like they are so far from downtown Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach. I have been to both beaches and I can tell you that everyone usually goes to Wrightsville and you usually hear of people camping on the beach and partying at Carolina Beach.

Also you have the largest marine base on the eastern seaboard located 45 minutes north of their with marines that often come to Wilmington as well.

    But you can actually plan a really nice secluded weekend getaway in Wilmington if you listen to the following;

    1. Quiet/secluded/romantic beach- go to either end of Wrightsville Beach to acheive this. Go to the end where the Oceanic Restaurant is at (parking is a pain) or to the end where Shell Island Resort.

    2. Nightlife: Wrightsville Beach is alright, but I am a downtown kind of guy. PLENTY OF BARS THAT HAVE A CASUAL FEEL OR DANCE CLUB ENVIRONMENT. GOODFELLAS (Bar on one floor, dancefloor on another); BluePost (really chill feel; fooseball table, pool tables) Level 5 (rooftop bar) and a variety of other martini lounges (used to be capri and deluxe) or other night venues. Just walk down front street and go either direction

    3. As far as Ft fisher... I would take her to the aquarium and stop at 17th St deli before you head there and maybe take a picnic at Ft fisher. The aquarium is right by FT fisher too.

Either way enjoy your holiday !!

also downtown wilmington is rich in history ( Bellamy mansion) .... kind, of cool too is the serpentarium the feeding starts at 330... the battleship is across the river... airlie gardens is also beautiful.... there really is alot to offer there, cotton exchange in downtown wilmington.... good restaurants that have great views on wrightsville beach too...

  • can we do the Smoky Mountain train and Clingmans Dome.......

in one day? My husband and I are staying at Harrah%26#39;s in Cherokee for 2 nights before we head to Franklin (by traveling the BRP and going through Highlands) and staying there for 2 nights. The train ride starts at 10:30 and lasts for 4 hours. But I don%26#39;t want to rush in the Smokies in the afternoon.

I even thought of driving up from the cabin in Franklin to do the train ride, but then it will shorten our time for gem mining.

Okay, should I just skip the train??? Thanks for any suggestions.

can we do the Smoky Mountain train and Clingmans Dome.......

    You should have no problems.

The train departs from Bryson City which is about 10 miles from Cherokee and the entrance to the park. It should take approx 30 minutes to get to the Clingman%26#39;s Dome entrance from Cherokee, although traffic could change this.

I%26#39;m not sure how much gem mining you want to do, but cutting some of that time shorter to ride the train sounds more reasonable. Bryson City is still only around 40 miles from Franklin.

Hope you have a great trip! Let us know what you decide.

can we do the Smoky Mountain train and Clingmans Dome.......

Thanks for your help! Since we are so close to Bryson City when we are in Cherokee, we should just go ahead and ride the train while we are in the area. We really want to do that. And we have been to the Smokies before many years ago. Just not during the springtime; oh, I bet it is so beautiful. We certainly aren%26#39;t going to spend alot of time at the casino. Especially after all the negative stuff that I have read.

And we won%26#39;t spend alot of time at a gem mine in Franklin, but I do want to stay and enjoy the cabin that we are renting there. So much to do and so little time!!!!!! We will just have to go back....

    Thanks again.

We are heading toward North Carolina next Monday. YEA!!!

Have a great time, and be sure to write up a trip report when you get back!

    Lucky you.

    Have fun.

    Just back--Cherokee, Harrahs casino/hotel

We just got back yesterday from a 2 day week-end trip to Cherokee casino--we stayed at the hotel there, which was comped, very nice as usual, comfortable bed, clean, big bathroom, 42'; hd lcd tv, and a breathtaking view on the 9th floor.

We were there for the Diamond card celebration, lots of good food, and lots of tickets drawn for cash prizes, but we were not one of the ';lucky'; ones.

I have to say and agree with some of the other posters on here, that the slot machines have really tightened up since our last visit-- we spend well over $ 1,500...and didn%26#39;t much of anything--so guess the economy is affecting the casino%26#39;s now...The place was packed with wall to wall people, you could barely walk or find a machine to play, but I think we will stick to our yearly trip out to Las Vegas, at least there we have a better chance of winning,

( more than one casino there)...so I hope all of you that do go to cherokee, have better luck than we did.

    Just back--Cherokee, Harrahs casino/hotel

Forgot to say, that there is alot of construction going on at the casino area, building a bigger casino, parking garage, and theater, doesn%26#39;t look the same anymore.

    Just back--Cherokee, Harrahs casino/hotel

Yes. They really have been doing a lot of construction around the casio.

    Anniversary weekend getaway

My wife and I are goin to the 2009 Quail Hollow Championship and are looking for suggestions for dining in Charlotte. I think we%26#39;ve already decided on Penguin as a must, but would like recommendations for a moderately priced ';nice'; restaurant and a couple winery suggestions close to Charlotte.

    Anniversary weekend getaway

Not sure what you would consider moderately priced, but a new tapas restaurant opened recently called Good Food on Montford. It is not traditional Spanish tapas, but everything we tried was excellent. And for 4 of us with a lot of wine and cocktails it was around $60 or 70 each with tip.

    Soundside Activities

We have usually stayed in Nags Head, and have rented ocean front homes. Last year we stayed in Avon, and the mosquitoes ate us alive! This year, we are thinking of staying in Corolla, in a soundfront home. We have 13 children in the family, ages 2-12. Can anyone tell me: 1)do people swim in the sound? I haven%26#39;t read any descriptions of rental homes that discuss swimming in the sound. 2)what communities are best for the ocean to be w/in walking distance? 3)any communities with bike trails for the kids? 4) are the mosquitoes bad on the soundside?

Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks.

    Soundside Activities

I would not swim in the sound-you will encounter snakes by the shoreline. Many people enjoy windsurfing, crabbing, and kayaking. The nice part about the sound is the fabulous sunsets.

Most of the communities on the oceanside of the road are not much further than 3 or 4 blocks. Some offer a parking lot close to the beach for unloading beach stuff-nice when you have small children as they seem to require so much!

Corolla Light has trails and there are trails on most parts of the main road-but I am not sure I would trust the kids out there alone.

Mosquitoes can be bad everywhere, just depends on the time of year and the frequency of rain.

    Soundside Activities

Glad I asked - very helpful. Thanks!

    Prom Dinner

My daughter and her friends are looking for somewhere to eat before the prom. Since they are teenagers and parents are footing the bill I would say the price should be $25-30 per person. Preferably on the south side of Charlotte. Any suggestions??

    Prom Dinner

We really like PF Changs, over by Southpark mall, or even the Cheesecake Factory, which might actually be better for them, both I would call to make reservations though...

    Prom Dinner

    A couple of suggestions -

Brio near Southpark Mall (Italian, steaks, seafood, accepts reservations), Barrington%26#39;s (East of Phillips Place, would be at the higher part of your range, small restaurant that accepts reservations, great food and service, Zagat top rated), and Villa Antonio (Ballantyne Village - accepts reservations, Italian, steaks, seafood).

A dessert suggestion is Salara Dessert Lounge and Bistro in Ballantyne Village - cool place with high tables or leather chairs to hang out. Every kind of dessert you can imagine. If you were already in Ballantyne, it is easy to combine with the dinner restaurant for a special event.

McCormick %26amp; Schmick%26#39;s at Southpark - and have them request one of the private booths with draw curtains. Best wishes.

Thanks for all the suggestions. We went and checked out all of your suggestions yesterday. Unfortunately, Villa Antonio was not open and we could not speak with anyone there. Cheesecake Factory was their first choice but will not take reservations and no one wants to stand around in tuxs and ball gowns waiting for a table. Brio was beautiful and their private room was exactly what she was looking for but it was booked. but she liked the restaurant so much that it%26#39;s still on the list. I think the final choices are Brio and Ruth%26#39;s Chris Steakhouse. Thanks for all your help. If anyone has any other suggestions your input is certainly welcome.

Would the Cheesecake Factory take call ahead seating? Sometimes if you say you%26#39;ll have x number of people coming at 6:30, they will say they can%26#39;t guarantee a table right then but you%26#39;re still ahead of the walk ins. I ran into the same thing when trying to book my husbands party at another restaurant and once I explained it to the manager our situation they accomodated us.

Not sure how many are in your party but Villa Antonio in Ballantyne has two party rooms - they fit 15-70 people. I have seen large Homecoming/Prom groups at Brio before. All of the suggestions offered would be good ones and I am sure they will have a fun time.

Flying out of Charlotte, car security?

I will have to leave my car in Charlotte for 8 days. Is the airport parking secure? Would I be better off using a hotel that allows parking for long term? Any advice is appriciated!

    Thanks!

Flying out of Charlotte, car security?

I think its fairly secure. I have never had any trouble leaving a car in the lots. They are fenced and patroled. DO NOT leave your car at a hotel near the airport.

Flying out of Charlotte, car security?

I agree- the lots are safer than hotel parking lots. I have parked in the long term lots and never had any problems. I have heard of isolated cases of vandalism. Just don%26#39;t leave anything visible in your car that would attract a thief. Best wishes.

I would be much more comfortable leaving my car at the airport

I had left my car at the airport daily parking lot for 3 days...it seems to be quite safe..have never tried the remote parking..so cant comment..

Hotel parking around the airport is the least safest. Next would be the long-term airport parking. The safest option of the three is the daily parking lot. You%26#39;ll wind up paying more but it is the most secure option. As others stated don%26#39;t leave any traces of valuables in sight. (Including the circular ring on your windshield from a GPS mount.)

We like to park in the remote lot but the last time we flew out that lot was closed and we finally found parking in the Long Term Lot 1. We have never (yet) had any problems.

Last month to see the turtles

August is the last month of the year that you can visit the turtles at the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, aka, the Turtle Hospital.

The Turtle Hospital gets very busy and the lines are long, so if you are going to see the turtles this month, I suggest you get there early. Volunteers there take you behind the scenes and to see the turtles that are recovering from illness or injury.

There is also a gift shop there.

The Turtle Hospital is open from 2-4 p.m. every day except Wednesday and Sunday, the gift shop is also open during those hours, although, sometimes it closes if there is a turtle emergency. The phone number for the hospital is 328-3377.

It is also the last month for Turtle Talks, which takes place at the Surf City Community Center, located on JH Batts Road, which is the road off Hwy 210 between Docksider and Gilligan鈥檚.

Turtle Talks take place every Wednesday from 3:45 鈥?4:45 p.m. The program is very informative and appropriate for both children and adults.

If you can%26#39;t make it to see the turtles or hear the Turtle Talks, you can keep up with what is going on with turtles on Topsail at the Turtle Hospital%26#39;s website http://www.seaturtlehospital.org/ .

Last month to see the turtles

I was researching Bald Island but I think you have to join the conservancy to take a night walk to see the turtles. Where is Surf City? I assume it%26#39;s on the Atlantic Coast. Is it anywhere near Bald Island or Wilmington? This might be a great option for us instead of Bald Island. Thank you

Last month to see the turtles

Surf City is North of Wilmington. It is on Topsail Island which runs between Jacksonville NC and Wilmington NC.

The Turtle Hospital is south of Surf City in the town of Topsail Beach.

I don%26#39;t know what other turtle activities they promote that would allow you to interact with them. I do know that they take note of nest sites and fence them off. When we were there last summer, another visitor was discussing the nest near their house and was asking the volunteers when it was due to hatch, but the staff there really didn%26#39;t want to say much probably to discourage people from interfering with the nest.

    Suggest looking at their website.

The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, a.k.a., the turtle hospital, is located on Topsail Island in Topsail Beach. It is open to the public from mid-june through August from 2 to 4 p.m. every day except Sundays and Wednesdays, or if there is a turtle type of emergency.

During the hatching season you might come upon a nest at night where there are people from the turtle hospital nest sitting. They do not mind if you sit there with them in anticipation of a hatching, but you have to play by their rules - no flash photos, no flashlights, etc.

    The website is seaturtlehospital.org

Its best to wait until they release the Turtles back in the water at the south end,This usually happens around the second week in June.Theres not much to see at the Hospital other than a few Turtles swimming around in some tanks. Its better to see them swim back into the Ocean on their own. There is always a crowd of about 2,000 People cheering them on.

    Celebrating Anniversary Stay

Your only choice I know of for the spa and hotel is Ballantyne Resort. It%26#39;s not cheap but sometimes they run specials. I have stayed at the hotel and gone to the spa several times - it is very good. Congrats on your anniversary!

    Celebrating Anniversary Stay

Just remembered- this is not in Charlotte - but the Embassy Suites in Concord ( near the speedway) was a spa - haven%26#39;t been and don%26#39;t the qulaity, but they have one. The Great Wolf Lodge opened just down the road - also has a spa but is really geared toward hundreds of screaming kids! ( LOL) Can%26#39;t imagine a romantic night at that place! Best wishes.

Sorry to spam :) but I apologize for the typos! In a hurry!

I would stay in the South Charlotte/Ballantyne area and make reservations at either the Ballatyne Resort Spa or at Urbana on Pineville Mstthews/Carmel. (Urbana is only 5 minutes from the Ballantyne Hotels.)Urbana is less expensive and has a great massage + tea bar. I find Urbana to be more relaxing than the Resort Spa but if you are looking for something other than a massage (e.g. manicure, facial, etc), then I would go to the Resort.

    Hi adoptivemom,

My hubby and I are celebrating our anniversary soon as well! We have a trip planned this summer for a bigger celebration, but we wanted to do something nice to celebrate the actual day as well. We decided on a spa/hotel “staycation” here in Charlotte, and I don’t mind sharing with you my research so here goes:

I looked into Ballantyne Resort and Spa. The best deal I could find for my weekend was $180 for couples’ massage and $199 per night to stay at the resort. If you don’t mind the price tag, their spa is REALLY nice (I’ve used it in the past). This time it was a little high for us, so I kept looking.

We decided on the following: We’re getting a couples massage at Oasis Day Spa on 7th street close to Uptown (in the Elizabeth neighborhood) for $150: http://oasis-dayspa.net/

We also found a good deal at the Westin in Uptown. I happen to have a gift certificate for the Westin’s restaurant, so that’s what drove us to stay there.

    Other options I looked into:

OMspa in South End: http://www.omspa.net/ I’ve never been there before, but right now they’re offering a couples massage for $145 ($25 off their regular price – go the “specials” link on their website).

Urbana: http://www.escape2urbana.com/ but their couples massage was the same price as Ballantyne’s, and for the money I’d rather go to Ballantyne.

Also, if you do decide on Ballantyne Spa but don’t want to stay at the Resort, the Staybridge in Ballantyne is also surprisingly nice. It’s only a few blocks away from Ballantyne Resort, so you wouldn’t have far to go, and it’s a good deal cheaper – I think their rates are closer to $100 a night.

Good luck planning your anniversary celebration!

    mid november with a toddler....

Any suggestions for visiting Asheville, Black Mountain and lake Lure areas about 2 weeks after Halloween?

My daughter will be 2 1/2 and she%26#39;s probably at a 3 1/2 yr old level as far as attention span/activities.

We plan on Biltmore, emphasizing farm and maybe winery. i know we will be going down town and walking around- any suggestions for lunch with a toddler in that area??? we will be staying somewhere nearby so any suggestions for a great local dining experience for us all?

Will probably stay at Monte vista in BM, so we can be nearby to downtown.

I know we will go to chimney rock and as my daughter likes being out and seeing waterfalls, am sure she will like it. any other suggestions for that area??

what any pre-holiday events in the area? not alot has been posted yet on tourism sites....

    thanks for all the help!!!!!

    mid november with a toddler....

I think your little one will enjoy the trip...as far as kid friendly downtown...Mellow Mushroom for Pizza comes to mind first though it doesn%26#39;t exactly qualify as a ';great local dining experience'; you certainly are right downtown. Maybe lunch at Table? THe owner has 2 young kids so I would bet they are pretty kid friendly, though the menu is somewhat pricey it is less so for lunch and he does work w/ a lot of local and regional foods.

Please be very, very careful at Chimney Rock. Last year a toddler died after slipping under a guard rail.

I%26#39;d recommend WNC Nature Center for that age to see wild animals and maybe Health Adventure for hands on exhibits.

    mid november with a toddler....

thanks for the info- how would you rate downtown as far as being stroller friendly? ie, can we pack the %26#39;hummer%26#39; with good support and tires (but a little wide), the graco with decent support, or opt for a travel/umbrella (smaller) type?

    thanks for the help!

I don%26#39;t have small kids so I don%26#39;t know what to advise stroller wise. There are lots of hills, even in town, so I would pick something that is easy to push up hills but also easy to maneuver in shops with narrow aisles.

You can use either stoller downtown without much trouble. There are hills, but they are stroller friendly. I would suggest the Fiddlin%26#39; Pig on Tunnel Road for a different fun experience. It is a BBQ restuarnt that is family friendly and has bluegrass music. I am not a big bluegrass music fan, but always have fun there.

Hemby Bridge Opry - Bluegrass at Its Best

Home folk and visitors - I dropped by tell you about a new bluegrass venue in Hemby Bridge - just outside of Charlotte ( it%26#39;s really in Union County between Charlotte and Monroe).

The old and revered Mineral Springs Music Barn is now closed and that left a bluegrass void in the area. So, the Hemby Bridge Opry has opened in a nice, roomy, and clean garage.I found out about it by email.

We went tonight and heard Deeper Shade of Blue and they were fantastic. Admission is $8.00 and they have some good bands lined up each Saturday night at 7:00.

The venue is right off Sardis Church Rd ( which is just off Highway 74). You pass the church and the first road on the left is Scott Long Rd. Turn on to that and the first driveway to the right will take you back behind a house to the big white garage where the concerts are held.

There%26#39;s a good size dance floor for flat-footing and clogging. They people are friendly and the sound system is good. Chairs are in a semi circle.

They have hot dogs, popcorn, drinks and candy at low prices.

I hope to get more contact info soon and I%26#39;ll update this posting for future reference. For bluegrass fans, this is one of the best venues in the area ( sad that a city as big as Charlotte does not have a good, authentic bluegrass show weekly).

    Best wishes!

Hemby Bridge Opry - Bluegrass at Its Best

There are 2 weekly bluegrass places in this area, this one you mentioned, Hemby Bridge Opry, and another one, Mineral Springs Music Barn, just reopened. Here%26#39;s the info:

Every Friday Night at the Mineral Springs Music Barn, see schedule at www.MineralSpringsMusicBarn.com

    and

Every Saturday Night at the Hemby Bridge Opry, I don%26#39;t believe they have a website.

I don%26#39;t know much about the one in Hemby Bridge except what you mentioned, but the one in Mineral Springs has new ownership, it%26#39;s been cleaned up and is a very family friendly environment with great bands. Check them out at www.MineralSpringsMusicBarn.com

    Just 20 minutes from Charlote.

    Thanks.

Hemby Bridge Opry - Bluegrass at Its Best

Glad to hear Mineral Springs is back open. Too bad the shows are on Friday. Those of us would have to come from the west can%26#39;t get there due to the I-485 traffic on Friday evenings ( and being exhausted after a week of work! LOL). If it ever changes back to Saturday, we%26#39;ll be there! Best wishes.

Thanks bud and bluegrasslover! I didn%26#39;t know about either of these venues. :)

Beach Closures 09--Can you walk them?

Reading the forum and noted 08 beach closures and was wondering if closed just to driving or closed to all access (walking)?

Beach Closures 09--Can you walk them?

You may not ride or walk withing the roped off areas. You can swim in front of the areas but not come onshore within the restricted sections.

There is PLENTY of beach to use-no worries.

Beach Closures 09--Can you walk them?

The closures go to the high tide water mark so you can walk along the waters edge at low tide, of course you need to be sure you can get back before the tide comes back in or you might end up swimming!

As Lynn points out, last year there was plenty of beach to both walk and ride on, I think it was over 50% could be driven on. The closures have not started yet so we don%26#39;t know where they will be, it depends on where the piping plovers nest (or even show a desire to nest). Two spots you can count on for closures will be the north and south ends of the island, that is where the bird seem to like the most.

Actually it is low mean tide, not high as I posted, here the a link to a NSP brochure:

Will this affect the Springer Point Walk I have seen on the net?

BTW, we ended up getting one of the Cottages from Edwards for Tues through Fri night. These are the ones up on stilts.

We wanted the courtyard efficiency, but it was not available that Friday night, so instead of having to move we just bit the bullet and went with the cottage.

Kinda looking forward to having more space.

The beach closure does not affect Springer%26#39;s Point, so keep that on your list!

Are you staying in one of the Duck cottages?

Don%26#39;t believe it is a duck cottage. I think it is the 4 cottages that are on stilts but look like one unit.

Would like to hear your comments on Edwards and any tips you have. We plan to stay in one of the cottages at Edwards, too, later this year. Thanks. SV

    Local Eatery with Monthly Dinners

    Hi Charlotte Forumers!

In the spirit of sharing with locals and visitors alike, I thought I鈥檇 let you know what I did last night. ;) I went to Foskoskies on Shamrock Dr. 鈥?last night was the second (I believe) in a series of monthly dinners they鈥檝e been hosting, all based on a culinary theme. Last night鈥檚 was Greek food. $20 per person bought us four generous courses, and they also offered wines selected especially for the occasion. It was held next door to their main restaurant, is a space which they reserve for private parties. Seating was shared, so you get to know your neighbors (who really were our neighbors, lol). It鈥檚 informal and festive, and did I mention the food was fabulous?! Here鈥檚 what we had:

Appetizers (all served family style): stuffed grape leaves, spanikopita, and this really yummy almond and white bean dip that I can鈥檛 remember the name of

    Soup: greek lemon soup (YUM!)

Main course: lamb marinated in orange and other yummy herbs, plus veggies, eggplant chutney, and tzatziki (they also made chicken for those who didn鈥檛 like lamb)

Dessert: you had your choice of baklava, lemon cake, or date walnut pie

It started at 7pm, and everyone was served at once. This place is a new favorite of mine, having just discovered it a few months ago. These folks are friendly and they make some good grub!!! Of course they have their regular menu, and weekend specials that are fun and range from down-home cookin鈥?to tasty eclectic fare.

As far as the monthly dinners go, I think they鈥檙e on Tuesdays. May鈥檚 theme is Portuguese, and June鈥檚 is Swedish. Stop on by and get on their mailing list. I guarantee you鈥檒l love it!

For those of you who鈥檝e been in Charlotte for awhile, Foskoskies in located in the old Pike鈥檚 Soda Shop location. Here鈥檚 an article on it from Charlotte Magazine from last Summer: www.charlottemagazine.com/index.php鈥?/a>

And no, I鈥檓 not affiliated with the restaurant in any way, other then being a newly loyal patron.

    Happy eating! :)

  • Asheville as a base for travels ??

We are planning a trip in June from the NC coast ( Calabash ).

We%26#39;d like to spend 4 nights and include:

    Grandfather Mtn / Blowing Rock

    Linville %26amp; nearby waterfalls

    Mt. Mitchell

    Biltmore

Gorges State Park %26amp; nearby waterfalls

    Chimney Rock

Sunset boat tour on Lake Lure

We are not big hikers, but like to take LOTS of photos.

Would we be better off staying in Asheville and doing day trips from there, or splitting our trip into different segments with a hotel in each area ?

If you think the second option is the best....please suggest some division of sights and hotels/restaurants in the area. Also, has anyone gone to see the elk near Cove Creek or the Firefly display in mid-June near Gaitlinberg? Are they worth the trip ???

    Thanks so much.

Asheville as a base for travels ??

Cade%26#39;s Cove is ALWAYS worth the trip!I%26#39;ve never seen any elk but I have seen deer, bear, turkey, etc..

Asheville is fine for most of the day trips you have mentioned - except for those around Blowing Rock - I%26#39;d stay there - at Chetola Lodge or Yonahlossee Resort.

    Best wishes.

Asheville as a base for travels ??

I would look for someplace in Blowing Rock, Spruce Pine or Black Mountain...all will be less expensive and closer , in general, than Asheville. Better restaurant selection in Asheville or Blowing Rock, but also more expensive.

The fireflies are amazing but very hard to predict. The elk are a little skittish in June, with young calves and bulls in velvet, but they still come down at sunset to feed , at Cades Cove or, especially, Cataloochee Valley.

Your list is a lot to do in 4 days, too much IMHO. If you really want to do most of those things, I would plan a circular route and find a place to stay in the vicinity of each destination. If you decide on that approach, and you really like to take photos, consider taking the Blue Ridge Parkway from Blowing Rock all the way to the southern terminus at Cherokee. Spend about 7 hours on the BRP, stopping frequently to take photos, get lunch at the Pisgah Inn atop Mount Pisgah, catch a showing of %26#39;Unto These Hills%26#39; at the Cherokee outdoor theater and stay in Cherokee, then go up US 441 to Cades Cove the next AM

    Mangonboat -

could you suggest such a circular route ?

I would leave off Chimney Rock and Lake Lure.

Day 1:Coming from Calabash, I would take the ';northern route'; up I-40 as far as Hickory then go north on US 321 to Blowing Rock and spend that night at Chetola Lodge in Blowing Rock and eat at the lodge or any of a half dozen VERY nice restaurants in Blowing Rock.

Day 2 I would take the Blue Ridge Parkway south from Blowing Rock, stop at Mt. Mitchell, at Linville Gorge and maybe even a short side trip to Grandfather Mountain, although it is an expensive side trip. Continuing south on the BRP, stop at Craggy Gardens to see rhodedendron in bloom in June, then drop down to Asheville, and refuel, reload with snacks, etc. If you%26#39;ve got the time and you%26#39;ve never been , you could even go to the Biltmore Estate, spend 3-4 hours there ( also an expensive side trip) or hit it on the way back, day 4. Get back on the BR Parkway, continuing south. From Asheville you climb to over 500O feet. Think about getting a reservation to spend the night at the Pisgah Inn. If the weather is good, it is breathtaking up there in June.

Day 3, Have breakfast in the Pisgah Inn dining room and watch the sunrise fill the mountain coves with light..WOW! Continue south, stopping to look at Cold Mountain, Graveyard Fields, Devils Courthouse, Waterock Knob, before you drop down to Cherokee. Even if you dont stay in Cherokee, have lunch, visit and spend a little while meeting some very friendly folk. Head north on US 441. You will have plenty of time to get through Great Smokies National Park to Cades Cove in time for elk at sunset and/or the fireflies, just ask a ranger when you get there. Spend the night in or around Gatlinburg.

Day 4: Have a pancake breakfast in Gatlinburg, then drive Hwy 321 and the Foothills Parkway east through the valley back toward Interstate 40. If you are really up for a photo opportunity, at Crosby Tennessee, about 25 miles from Gatlinburg, get on the 2 lane gravel road up and over the ridge to Cataloochee. Like Cades Cove, Cataloochee was a small, close-knit farming community that was vacated when the park was created and better-paying jobs were waiting to the north. It is both unsettling and remarkably peaceful to see the few buildings as if they had been abandoned recently rather than almost 100 years ago. Watch for elk...far more concentrated here than anywhere east of the Rockies. From Cataloochee, head SE on the 2 lane gravel road up and out of the valley toward Maggie Valley, and get on Interstate 40 heading east, back toward Asheville.

WOW !!! Thanks so very much. That was just what I was looking for !

Maybe we%26#39;ll save Chimney Rock and Lake Lure for another trip. You%26#39;ve added things I didn%26#39;t know about and would be very interested in doing. Thanks again.

You mentioned seeing the elk in your first post. They are normally seen at Cataloochee, just outside Maggie Valley, approximately 45 minutes from Asheville.

Take I-40 to the Hwy 276 exit toward Maggie Valley. As soon as you are off the off-ramp, Cove Creek Rd will be on your right. It%26#39;s a long, winding road that eventually turns to gravel with tight corners, so drive carefully! I prefer to visit early in the morning so I%26#39;m not trying to drive out of Cataloochee in the dark.

I%26#39;ve been several times, and it%26#39;s always worth it to me. Check my profile under ';videos'; to see a short clip I took of two bull elks locking horns this winter.

Hope you have a great trip!

Just wanted to add a note about the Blue Ridge Parkway--be aware that some sections between Asheville and Blowing Rock are closed right now due to rockslides. Check www.blueridgeparkway.org for updates.

    Yep, and here, too.

    nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/roadclosures.htm

THE BRP plans to have the road open all the way south from Blowing Rock by May 15, including the long section between Mt. Mitchell and Craggy Gardens that has been closed for a while due to rock slides. The section just north of Blowing Rock, between Deep Gap and Blowing Rock, is still closed for bridge work at Bamboo Gap.Otherwise, I would have suggested getting off I-40 at US 421 in Winston-Salem and driving up 421 to Deep Gap and getting on the BRP there. The stretch from Deep Gap to Blowing Rock , only 30 minutes worth, is one of my favorites in springtime. Long vistas and very pretty rolling high-mountain pastures. Check with the BRP before you leave and see if that section , milepost 285-291, has re-opened. (The section between 269 and 280 is actually north of Deep Gap, even though it is listed as ';Blowing Rock area'; on the BRP website).

I should caution that any travel itinerary that includes the BRP has to have a back up plan using other routes. Even in June, the BRP can be fogged in so bad you can%26#39;t see the front of your own hood, especially in the early part of the day, even when it looks like a nice but slightly hazy day down in the valleys...there is a 4000 foot elevation difference, between Asheville and Craggy Gardens, e.g.

Make sure that you check to see if the BRPKWY is open near Craggy Gardens. They have been working on the road there. I heard a rumor that they were going to open one lane there. Think that it makes a lot of sense to go to Blowing Rock first. Skip Boone, ick! If you don%26#39;t like curvy narrow mountain roads, I would stay off Shoals Mill Rd./Yonahlossee Resort at night. Beautiful place, but slightly off the main area. Give yourself a lot of time if you drive down the BRPKWY. Beautiful time to do it with the rhododendrons in bloom. If you want a slight detour, Roan Mountain will definitely be in bloom around the mid of June with the Catawba rhodys. Quite a sight. However, it is definitely one of my favorite drives down the parkway from B.R. Don%26#39;t miss the Linn Cove Viaduct near Grandfather Mountain. If clear, it is amazing! May take about 4 hours to drive from BR to AVL on the Parkway. Bring a picnic, not much food along the way. Have a great time!

  • Battleground Inn

I%26#39;m coming to Greensboro and was going to stay at the Battleground Inn, just because I had seen the place and it was convenient and inexpensive. There are no reviews on Tripadvisor, which seems odd. Does anyone know if the place is livable, and, if not, any other reasonably priced (under $100), digs in town. Thanks!

    Battleground Inn

Battleground Inn is an excellent choice...no problems at all.

    Battleground Inn

have booked Battleground Inn several times..rooms are decent size, always clean, staff friendly %26amp; helpful, and as you said convenient location...have never had a problem there...not the place to go if you are looking for an ';everything in one place'; kind of hotel, but a decent place to stay

I realize this is an old thread but I wanted to add that I just stayed at the Battleground Inn last weekend and had a nice stay. I cannot find this hotel listed on TA. The rooms are fairly small but clean and the staff was very friendly. Convenient location not too far from the Greensboro Coliseum, and UNC-Greensboro. Decent continental breakfast with yogurt and a selection of pastries/bagels. The rate was pretty darn good--around $75 (included tax) which made this a good hotel at a budget price.

    Breakfast and dinner recommendations

Hi. We are staying in Blowing Rock on Saturday, 4-25. Planning to eat at Twigs or Storie street grill - your thougths and any other suggestions for dinner? Can anyone provide a good suggestion for breatkfast? We%26#39;d be interested in your thoughts on the Village Inn- we are staying there.

    Breakfast and dinner recommendations

We left there yesterday--- in a snow shower!. But, warmer and nice weather is predicted for the remaining next few days.

I hope you have reservations at Twigs! They will take them. Storie Street is good also, downtown and can be very busy. Will not take reservations for less than 6. Bistro Roca is another Blowing Rock pick. About 2 blocks off the Main Street and will take reservations. The Best Cellar is great and does take reservations.

In Boone, on Main Street is Melanie%26#39;s. Great breakfast and brunch food.

There is another small place in Blowing Rock on the main street, down some stairs, near the little market and Kilwins. I just cannot think of the name. Thought it was the Blowing Rock Cafe, but cannot find that. All there is--- is a sign that points down the outdoor steps. Only open for breakfast and lunch and it is excellent. Maybe someone else can come up with the name.

I am not familiar with the Village Inn, sorry.

    Steamed seafood to go

Can you recommend some places that steam seafood to go at reasonable prices and is fesh.

    Thanks...

    Steamed seafood to go

Sugar Creek down on the Causeway. Several places offer steamer buckets where you take them home and cook them in the bucket. Harris Teeter grocery has good seafood. Billy%26#39;s on Colington Road sells steamed shrimp, but I think it is out of season for local shrimp. Awful Athurs. There are a lot of places here but much will be frozen and then steamed, but you%26#39;ll still love it.

All crab legs are frozen then steamed.

    Steamed seafood to go

Steamers Shellfish to Go up in the Timbuck II shopping complex in Corolla has excellent steamed shellfish as well as other entrees.

If you are near Kitty Hawk and Southern Shores, try Coastal Provisions Market. It is in the shopping center across from the Hilton Inn and the Crown gas station. It%26#39;s sort of hidden but worth finding. They have good seafood and they have great prices of steamer buckets.

    Babysitting Services?

We will be visiting Topsail in 2 weeks. We are bringing our 5 yr old as well. I was curious if anyone could reccommend a sitter/nanny just incase we wanted to go out to dinner with out him :) I am not sure if there is any sort of service or anything...suggestions appriciated!

    Babysitting Services?

I don%26#39;t know of any babysitting services off hand but I do know Sneads Ferry Quality Childcare is an excellent daycare provider. They are located in Sneads Ferry just off Hwy 210 at 103 Ridge Field Avenue. You could probably call them for referrals. (910) 327-2876

  • Help plan a week in NC (with a 4-month-old)

    Hi there,

My wife and four-month-old daughter will be in NC for a week starting June 6. We had thought about spending it at the beach (OBX, etc.) but I have also heard good things about Asheville and Charleston. We%26#39;ll be in Chapel Hill at the end of the week for a friend%26#39;s wedding.

We%26#39;ll be renting a car, so multiple stops are ok. We would like to get to the beach for at least some of the time. Trying to avoid loud, crowded places if possible.

Can any of you NC experts help me out with some suggestions (places to go/stay? Thanks!

    Bruno

Help plan a week in NC (with a 4-month-old)

Hi bborn, and congrats on the baby!

NC is a beautiful state with lots of different things to offer. If you don%26#39;t get down here often, I would definitely recommend moving around a bit rather than staying the entire week in one place. Regarding the beach, the Outer Banks are great, but certain areas can get very crowded in the summer (especially around Nags Head/Kitty Hawk). I love visiting the Outer Banks, but for the actual beach itself I much prefer the South Brunswick beaches--Sunset Beach, Ocean Isle, and Holden Beach (these are further south near the SC state line). Not crowded, easier to get to than the OBX, water is usually a bit warmer, and the sand is easier to walk on. The mountains are not to be missed, IMO, so you should plan to take in both.

If you look at a road map, you%26#39;ll see that I-40 cuts across the state mostly towards the middle/north, while US 74 cuts across the bottom. So you could plan a big loop using these two highways. For example, assuming you fly into Raleigh, you could take I-40 towards Wilmington and the southern beaches to spend a few days (this area is about 2 hours from Raleigh). Then take US 74 west through Charlotte to Asheville, which you could use as a base to explore the mountains (visit the Asheville forum for more info). Then from Asheville you can take I-40 back to Raleigh (about 4 hours). This loop will work whether you fly into Raleigh, Charlotte, or Greensboro.

Problem is, just about any recommended itenerary will leave out many good places/things to do because there are so many choices. Other places to consider:

    Boone/Blowing Rock

    Yadkin Valley winery tours

Great Smoky Mountains National Park/Maggie Valley

    Great Smoky Mountains Railway

    Old Salem (in Winston-Salem)

    Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill

    Highlands/Cashiers

Blue Ridge Parkway (a must, IMO)

Just google any of the above for more info. If you have more questions, feel free to ask!

Help plan a week in NC (with a 4-month-old)

Wow, thanks for the great reply. A couple of thoughts:

    - Doing a loop sounds great, but the drive from Wilmington-area to Asheville looks pretty long ... would it be worthwhile to just stop in Charlotte and hang out there before heading back to Raleigh (we%26#39;re flying in/out of there). I%26#39;m assuming there%26#39;s plenty to do in Charlotte as well?

    - I think we%26#39;ll skip the Outer Banks and head south as you suggested. We%26#39;d love to find a cottage or condo with a kitchen, or maybe a B%26amp;B, any recommendations?

Thanks again, it%26#39;s great to be able to get expert advice to plan our first vacation with our little girl!

Wilmington to Asheville is about a 5 hour drive...really not too bad. Nothing against Charlotte, but IMO it doesn%26#39;t really offer anything unique that you couldn%26#39;t find in other cities of similar size. It doesn%26#39;t begin to compare to the mountains--I would strongly recommend Asheville or Boone/Blowing Rock over Charlotte any day. You can easily break up the trip by stopping somewhere along the way, like Raleigh or Winston-Salem, if you take the I-40 route. And the Boone trip is a little shorter, only about 4 1/2 hours from Wilmington/Wrightsville Beach.

Sorry I don%26#39;t have any specific recommendations for lodging at the beach (we own property there so we rarely stay anywhere else). You can find plenty of info if you search the Wilmington and Ocean Isle Beach sub-forums (or post your questions there). There are lots of lodging choices at the coast, so you should have no trouble finding something that fits your needs. Just be aware that places book up quickly for the summer, so you should go ahead and make arrangements ASAP.

Good luck, and I know you%26#39;ll enjoy your trip!

Can%26#39;t argue w/ beaches and/or mountains...we enjoy both. Don%26#39;t discount the area around Charlotte, however. It%26#39;s not a typical vacation spot, true, but there are several unique things to %26#39;around%26#39; Charlotte. Yadkin Valley vineyards is one..(Raffaldini is our favorite...you%26#39;ll think you are in Napa!), National Whitewater Center (rafting, outdoor activities), North Carolina Zoo, Lowe%26#39;s Motor Speedway, Great Wolf Lodge (waterpark, lodging, etc..). Minor league baseball is big in North Carolina, and there is usually a ballclub w/in driving distance. All of this stuff is w/in 1.5 hours of Charlotte.

^ Good points, gator, but many of those activities would be impractical with an infant (e.g., rafting, auto races, water parks).

....perhaps, but for the Speedway, was thinking more along the lines of a tour, hiking and walking at whitewater center, and swimming at Great Wolf. Some babies are great...put them a stroller or backpack and off you go...some, well, don%26#39;t cooperate w/ such adventures. Depends on the baby (and parents) I guess. I%26#39;ve been on some of my best hiking adventures w/ a baby strapped to my back. : )
