Where to go during Thanksgiving in NC?

We are going to visit our daughter at Duke over Thanksgiving week. We would like to take 3 days to go to the beach area. I have no idea where is the best area to go to. Is November on the ocean a bad idea? Is it too cold? Are things closed up? Are there any special places to go for Thanksgiving? We are from California and have never been to the East Coast so I would love to hear recommendations since I am CLUELESS about NC. Thank you so much.

Where to go during Thanksgiving in NC?

We have been to Carolina/Kure Beach area twice during Thanksgiving. First time it was in the low 70%26#39;s sunny, beautiful...second time low 50%26#39;s still sunny, but very windy..rain later that week.

It is impossible to predict what the weather will be like that time of year. Heck, could even snow.

BUT....head to the beach anyway..stay a couple of nights. It is a lovely area. Most places will be open, resturants and grocery stores, but there will be no crowds.

Since you will be in the area anyway...may as well visit the coast. Have fun!!

^ I agree with beachlady...even a bad weather day at the beach beats being almost anywhere else.

Since you%26#39;ve never been here, I suggest you consider the Outer Banks. It%26#39;s such a unique place, with beautiful scenery and lots of history and interesting things to do--lighthouses, pirate lore, great seafood, and much more. Here%26#39;s a link with plenty of info: http://www.outerbanks.org/

Of course, the same could be said for most areas of the NC coast. Wilmington and its area beaches also have a lot going for them, so I don%26#39;t think you%26#39;ll be disappointed whatever you decide to do. Here%26#39;s a link with info about the Southern coastal area: http://www.insiders.com/wilmington/

Good luck, and feel free to ask more questions. There are a number of posters here who can give you lots of good info about specific places.

Thank you so much for this advice, I am studying the places you suggest. Does anyone happen to know of any place that does something special for Thanksgiving? Heck, isn%26#39;t this where it all started? Aren%26#39;t there some pilgrims around? Just kidding. Oh, here is another stupid %26#39;Californian%26#39; question; do I have to be worried about storms or hurricanes on the Outer Banks? Is there a good resort with an indoor pool and slides? Thanks again for your valuable expertise.

The Wrightsville Beach/Wilmington area will be more ';happening'; than Carolina or Kure Beaches, and possibly more so than Outer Banks off season. Plus it is the closest beach area to Durham (I live in Raleigh and have a place at Wrightsville). Wilmington is a mid-sized port city that is right next to Wrightsville, so you will have restaurants, the art museum, theaters, shopping, the Battleship N.C., etc. all open and operating just like summer. We go to Wrightsville every year for New Years (and lots of other times off season), and find plenty of people around at the beach and hardly anything closed. However, I have heard people talk about a lot being closed off season at the OBanks.

I agree with the previous poster about the weather. Could be anything, sunny and beautiful or cold. Either way it will still be fun.

The best option at WB for inside pool, etc. is the Holiday Inn Sunspree. Although I don%26#39;t think they have slides.

I remember when we were there (Carolina Beach) for Thanksgiving...it was also the start of christmas season...and they had a Christmas Lighting festivities at the little Lake there...they had decorations and lights all around the lake, booths set up with refreshments, Santa Claus was there...and carolers...It was very neat...made you feel like a part of the community.
