We are visiting the first week of June. I read that some of the beaches are closed to protect endangered birds. Is this correct and how much area is off-limits? Which locations?
Thanks

Beach Closures?
We will be there this weekend. I will report back with info regarding the latest beach closure info.
Here is a link to a map and some discussion on the closures:

This is a very controversial issue on both Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands. One correction I would make to your question is that the birds being protected are not on the endangered species list. There is still beach open on Ocracoke, just not as much as there used to be. The problem is that the restrictions can change daily. The NPS is required by court order to keep a 1000 meter buffer from any piping plover nest so where ever the little guys and gals decide to nest can take away 2000 meters of beach. The sad thing is that the recent storm created overwash that wiped out any nests on the south point but the area will still remain closed in case the birds decide to have another go at nesting.
At the same time this was put in place, a ban on beach driving between 10:00 pm and 6:00 am was put in place. This is for turtle nesting protection and I believe stays in palce until October 15th (it may be September 15th). In addition, there is some discussion that the NPS will restrict the number of vehicles they allow on the open sections of beach at any one time. I don%26#39;t know if this will be done on Ocracoke but NPS has verbally stated this will be done on Hatteras (which tends to be a lot more crowded). All these rules are brought to us courtesy of the Defenders of Wildlife and the Audubon Society.

Ocracoke beaches are open and ready for use, both on foot or by vehicle. There are very few beach closures and even at South Point, you should not have a problem fishing except from the smallest portion at the very end of the point. This beach closure madness really has been blown out of proportion, at least on Ocracoke. I promise that you could be here for 2 weeks and have access to a different beach each day.
