Spending the Summer in NC?

Hey!

I%26#39;m going to be working in NC over the Summer and just wanted some opinions and ideas on what the must-see attractions are that I have to check out? I%26#39;ve had a flick through travel guides, but they just suggest the generic touristy things and I want to see things that are a bit different and you might not discover otherwise? :) I%26#39;m mainly going to be staying around Greensboro, but want to travel around the state too!

Thanks in advance!

Spending the Summer in NC?

To start with, what are your interests? Primarily sightseeing? Partaking in sports activities? NC is not a small state, so there is a fairly large variety of things to see and do. Gives us an idea as to what intrigues you.

Also, will you have a car at your disposal while in Greensboro? Will you be on a tight budget? Need much more information so that I can offer some suggestions.

The North Carolina state Zoo is like a half hour from Greensboro in Asheboro. It%26#39;s a big natural habitat zoo, where you can literally spend the entire day. (Arrive in the morning and stay through the afternoon.) Considered one of the best in the country.

Ditto retiredagent. Too many things to start naming not knowing your interests...but once you clarify, a bunch of us are ready! LOL.

Hey guys!

Interests...

Music (I like a mixture of genres, so anything%26#39;s cool really! Pop/Rock/Country are always a good bet)

Art

Shopping ;)

Comedy

Sightseeing

Films

Books

Museums

(I was going to put bars/clubs then remembered the drinking age is 21 :p)

Hope that helps!

Also, I%26#39;d likely be travelling by train/bus and I have a pretty tight budget. Ooh %26amp; would love to learn how to surf so any suggestions regarding that would be ace too!)

Thanks! x

Ps. Loving the zoo suggestion, will so have to check that out!

Well, you%26#39;ve listed quite a few interests....I%26#39;ll try to give you some basic and individual ideas.

You said you would like to see a bit of different things than the ';touristy things';. Those are the hard parts to this answer.

Pop/Rock/Country music shows will always be advertised in the local paper. They will be normally held in nightclubs and sometimes theaters and the War Memorial.

Museums - The Weatherspoon Art Gallery at UNCG, and the Greensboro Historical Museum.

Shopping can be had at the numerous attractive shopping malls and shopping centers scattered throughout the city. Some very lovely and some the normal chain type stores.

Comedy - see above for music.

Sightseeing - Aye, there%26#39;s the rub. Without a car it will be difficult, expensive and time consuming to see many of NC%26#39;s lovely scenery and attractions from the Outer Banks almost 200 miles to the east to the grand and majestic Blue Ridge mountains about 225 miles to the west, where you can even visit the Cherokee Indian Reservation. Public transportation to both would be involved and very time consuming. For example, to go to the Outer Banks by bus to indulge your yearning for surfing, it would take about 6 hours by bus and about 9 hours to return. And then you%26#39;ll be there in season when prices will be highest. I don%26#39;t think the fare in each direction will be inexpensive. And, at times, the surf is not compatible for surfing. There is no train service direct to the shore or the mountains.

There are at least 5 Cinemas with many theaters in each for films, but scattered through the city with poor public transport to each if any.

So, if you can give me your wishes in the Greensboro area, I will try to give you what is available. Or, tell me that your budget is not that low, and I%26#39;ll give you some alternatives.

Greensboro has a very lovely public library system also scattered through the city. Let%26#39;s get together on some good ideas.

P.S. How long will you be in GSO?

Glad to help and hope you enjoy your stay.

Forgot to mention.....going to the zoo would necessitate the use of a car.
