Question about the beaches

Several years ago my family went to Ocracoke for a day trip. We stopped along the road on the way into town and spent a few hours on the beach. We were the only ones on the beach and it was buffered by the large dunes. We returned the following year and sadly, a hurricane had washed away the dunes. We had full view of the ocean/beach as we were driving into town. I cant imagine how difficult it would be to restore the dunes . Just wondering if anyone knows what the area is like now?

Question about the beaches

Along the majority of the beach the dunes are fine. There is a section of the road between the pony pens and the Hatteras ferry where the road goes pretty close to the beach and along this section are several areas where the dunes have been breached by recent storms. DOT fills in the breaches but of course with no sea oats or anything to hold the sand it is only temporary until the next storm. You have to realize the outer banks are a shifting barrier island/peninsula. They move in and out, inlets open and close, sand washing away from one part and builds up in another part. If you have ever looked at topography maps from the 1700 and 1800 you will see what I mean, the outer banks has moved all around. It is only in the last 50 years or so when we have built structures on the beach that it really has mattered.
