Thought I%26#39;d post this for those of you who may travel through Greensboro on I-40. In a nutshell, a new outer loop was opened about a year ago. They re-routed I-40 onto the new loop and renamed the old route Business I-40, creating some confusion for travelers familiar with the old route. Portions of the new loop also include I-73 and I-85, adding to the confusion. So now DOT has decided to address the confusion with more confusion--Bus. 40 will be renamed I-40 (its original name), meaning I-40 travelers will now follow the more congested old route, which has a 55 mph limit rather than the 65 mph on the outer loop. That should clear things up, eh?
Here%26#39;s the link, if you%26#39;re not confused enough already:

Greensboro I-40 route changes--are you confused yet?

Greensboro I-40 route changes--are you confused yet?
So...if we are heading down to Wilmington, what signs should we follow?? What about heading down Rt. 220 toward Rockingham??
Beachlady, I assume you mean you%26#39;re traveling westbound on I-40? To get to Wilmington, you can take either route--the ';old'; I-40 through town, or the new loop which will become the I-73/US 421 route. The new loop rejoins the old route on the other side of Greensboro, so either option gets you to the same place. I%26#39;d think that, absent traffic considerations, the time would be about the same. It%26#39;s more miles around the loop, but you can go 10 mph faster. But if you%26#39;re coming through during rush hour times, you would want take the loop route.
If you%26#39;re going south on 220, you%26#39;ll need to take the I-73/US 421 loop. Just after you pass the airport exit, you%26#39;ll see a big Y split. The left hand lanes take you onto the new loop, while the right lanes take you through town. Even this is confusing, because the two routes cross each other just after the split--the new loop takes you around the right side of the city, but you stay in the left lanes to access it. Once you%26#39;re on the loop, the US 220 exit is maybe 6-7 miles, just past the I-85 south exit.
