Wild Horses without a tour?

We would like to drive to Corolla (we are staying in Duck) one day during our June vaca to see the Wild Horses. We have a 4 Wheel Drive SUV so it seems silly (and expensive) to rent a Jeep or pay for a tour. Will we have trouble finding the horses on our own? Are there any good guidebooks we can puchase w/info on the horses w/o taking a tour? Any recommendations would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Just air down just prior to getting to the end of the road and drive up to milepost 20 or so. Head inland either one or two roads and drive north. If you don%26#39;t see them by the time you make it to the Va border, turn around and come back on the other road not taken. You will likely see them. If not, drive in and around the fire station near MP 21, they tend to summer there. Good luck

Yes you may possibly see the horses on your own, but you need to be very careful. If you park and go on foot, do not approach a herd, these are wild horses and can be dangerous. The mothers are very protective and may charge.

The reason for the tours is to hopefully minimalize the tramping down of the dunes, grasses, and preserve wildlife. Also know that there are snakes, and wild boar up in Corova.

If you go to the beach in the area, you will most likely get lucky and see a group of horses up on the dunes in the afternoon.
