Small town or mountain area near Asheville

We are planning a late birthday trip for the Asheville area next fall, the first week of October to be exact.

Looking to stay in a B%26amp;B or quaint Inn in either the mountains or interesting/pretty small town.

Would love suggestions.

This is my first trip to my family%26#39;s homestate back in the late 1700%26#39;s, so it kind of feels like a homecoming.

Also, does anyone know of an old plantation owned by members of the Tillery family?

Try some of the B %26amp; Bs in Hendersonville just south of Asheville. Places like Inn on Church St, Claddagh Inn, The Waverly, etc... H%26#39;Ville is a very nice downtown with quaint shops and laid back atmosphere. Best wishes.

The Secret Garden Inn and Spa is right in the middle of ';downtown'; Weaverville, about 15 minutes north of Asheville. It is a renovation of the former mayor%26#39;s home, and offers very reasonable spa services if you%26#39;re into that in addition to B%26amp;B.Its just a nice small town that%26#39;s not too far out of the way. Stony Knob Cafe is Weaverville is excellent food nearby.

At the opposite extreme, of sorts, the Sourwood Inn is perched on a ridge at almost 3300 feet elevation about 7 miles northeast of Asheville on Elk Mountain Scenic Highway (a misnomer...its a very twisty mountain road that is still gravel in some areas....hardly a highway!) near the Blue Ridge Parkway. There is nothing else commercial withing 3 miles , the views are amazing and very relaxing for reading, watching the sunset, etc., and there is lots of good hiking nearby, and downtown Asheville is only 20 minutes away. You will have just a bit of color in the leaves at that elevation in early-October.

Thank you, the Sourwood Inn looks lovely.

Will the first week of October be too early for fall color?

Unfortunately, I%26#39;m having to work around Medical Staff meetings.

Want a real quiet town, try Bryson City and the B%26amp;B there, like the Charleston Inn, Freymont or Folkstone Inns all pretty cool B%26amp;Bs in the heart of the Smokies. You will be close to the start of the Blue Ridge Parkway, minutes from Great Smoky Mountains National Park and also the Cherohala Skyway.

The road has been paved all the way up Elk Mtn. Scenic Hwy. for atleast 7 years now. Reservations for October began on March 1st, so if you are interested you better make a reservation because they go fast!

I love the color at that time of year! The Sourwoods and the Dogwood trees are usually red at that time, depending on the weather.

so odd because I know I posted ont his earlier but it has disappeared...

small towns near Asheville, all of which have B%26amp;B%26#39;s.

Weaverville - closest at 10 min has a Spa (Secret Garden) and cute small main street, with a couple of B%26amp;B%26#39;s, restaurants , Well Bred coffee and Bakery shop, a lake w/ walking path. There are also cottages and B%26amp;B%26#39;s out Reem%26#39;s Creek Road which runs up towards the Blue Ridge Parkway

Black Mtn - about 20 min away. Home of Montreat College. Very quaint and larger downtown, also has a lake and lots of little shops and galleries and a few more restaurants than Weaverville. Also has a lake and the town backs up to the mtns.

Hendersonville - larger town about 30 minutes from Asheville - popular retirement area. Busy roads around town but very nice main street that runs about 3 or 4 blocks and has many restaurants, shops and galleries....near Pisgah Nat%26#39;l Forest

Waynesville -about 35-40 minutes - near Great Smokey Nat%26#39;l Park - rougthly the same size as Black Mtn

Burnsville - ';up the mtn'; from Weaverville and about 45 minutes from Asheville. Neat town square.

Sylva - about 45-50 min from Asheville - near Western Carolina University - small downtown, slightly larger than Weaverville with a few good restaurants and a great bakery/coffee shop (Annie%26#39;s) - near Dillsboro RR and Great Smokey Park

Mars Hill - about 25 min from Asheville, home of Mars Hill College - not much to see downtown but very quaint.

How about Brevard? It%26#39;s approx. 25 miles from Asheville. The gateway to Pisgah National Forest is on the outskirts of Brevard, Gorges State Park is very close, as is Dupont. Brevard is a small town with lots of charm.

There are bed %26amp; breakfast%26#39;s in Maggie Valley, also. It%26#39;s about 40 miles from Asheville, and very quiet.

Hope you enjoy your trip!

I would reccomend www.mountainmagnoliainn.com in Hot Springs about 30-to 40 minutes from Asheville in Madison County. Check out the site. The town has a lot of history and so does the Inn. It has gotten wonderful reviews of this board. The natural hot springs are great for soaking after a hike on the Appalachain Trail that runs through the town. Also great for river rafting. The Inn serves breafast and dinner, which is sooo....good. The scenery is breath taking especially with the fall colors.
