Hotel Close to OBX

We plan on driving most of the way down from Northern New Jersey on a Friday in July for a Saturday check-in hoping to avoid the traffic that I read so much about. We thought we could have breakfast and spend the day at the beach on Saturday, if the weather cooperates. With this in mind, can anyone suggest a place to stay within an hour or so of OBX on Friday night? We%26#39;re staying in Corolla, Ocean Lake subdivision, with a checkin at the Twiddy Duck office. Since we%26#39;ve never been there before, any suggestions would be appreciated. Will I hit traffic going to Duck to check in or on my way back to Corolla. Sorry for these elementary questions but having not been there before it%26#39;s hard to visualize what the traffic patterns are like. We%26#39;d just like to sit on the beach instead of traffic, if possible. I read a post from someone who suggested staying around Williamsburg the night before and walking through the village but I think that%26#39;s a little further out and not sure if it%26#39;s that%26#39;s possible. Thank you for your help.

You could try Elizabeth City, N.C. There are several hotels there.

If you%26#39;re looking to see some sites than Wmbg is a great and fun option, however if you%26#39;re looking to be real close, even in perfect traffic conditions (I-64 East, 664, Rt 168/158) and no gas/restroom stops it is 2 hours from Wmbg to the Wright Bros Mem Bridge.

I can%26#39;t really recall seeing any hotels along 168/158. If you want to stay close you can either drive about 45 mins inland to Elizabeth City has the previous poster stated. Or you could try Chesapeake, VA which would be about an hour straight shot to the bridge. Then of course there are hotels right in OBX that you could just do a one night stay so that you%26#39;re already across the bridge on Saturday.

If you were planning on coming from NJ and considering coming to Wmbg it sounds like you%26#39;re coming 95 to 295 to 64 to 664 to 64 to 168 to 158 to get to the Outer Banks. If you decide to skip Wmbg, I would recommend after the Delaware Memorial Bridge taking Rt. 1 to Rt. 13 so that you bypass 95 %26amp; 64 traffic completely through D.C. %26amp; VA. It%26#39;s a nice coastal eastern shore drive through MD %26amp; VA and you%26#39;ll get to cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel which is nice (esp. at sunset). That would put you right into the Norfolk/Chesapeake vicinity which is about an hour shot from OBX.

Thank you. I would prefer not driving 45 minutes inland but rather staying on the road leading in to OBX. Since we%26#39;re taking the costal route, it seems like the choice is either around the Chesapeake area or in OBX itself.
