Corolla bound 5/24 - 5/30!!

This is our first OBX trip. We rented a house in Corolla and cannot wait to go! I%26#39;ve got a bunch of questions but will only ask a couple now.

1. The price of my rental goes up a few hundred dollars the week after I rented it. Is the last week of May an off peak time? I figured it would be more since it%26#39;s Memorial Day week.

2. I have a stock Dodge Durango 4x4. Can I use that instead of renting jeeps? I really want to take the drive north looking for the horses. The tires are new and I know to let some air out for traction. Will I be safe?

You will love Corolla. We visited the OBX for the first time last summer and stayed there. As for the Durango...........I don%26#39;t know. We paid to take a tour in an air-conditioned Surburban to see the horses and it was great. The guide knew where to find the horses and obviously how to drive in the sand. We saw lots of people out with shovels trying to dig themselves out of the soft sand. There were also tree stumps on the beach. I don%26#39;t think I would take my own car up there and taking a chance. One of my favorite memories of the trip was being in the front seat and coming up over the dunes and seeing the ocean in such an unblemished place. It is SO beautiful there. You may want to check out www.obxconnection.com and see what kind of advice you get on there. Everybody on there knows about the OBX. Lots of locals and seasoned travellers. They can tell you exactly how much air to have in your tires and advise you to do it or not do it.

Have fun!

Hi WeJammin. To respond to your first question, there is no set time for the rates to change. It varies based on the cottage, with rates generally peaking in the July to early August time frame. Some cottages will charge more for a holiday week like Thanksgiving or Christmas.

To your second question. This forum gets a lot of questions about Corova. I have copied a link to an earlier thread which touches on a lot of issues dealing with staying and driving in that area...

I hope that helps!

Thanks to both of you for your info. The more I think about it, I probably won%26#39;t take my truck. I just put $500 into it and don%26#39;t want to risk it.

If you let the air pressure down to 20-22lbs and drive according to the published rules (15mph near people/vehicles) you shouldn%26#39;t have an issue. I had my Durango up beach for a number of years with no issues whatsoever. I was there this past weekend and was amazed by the number of horses lounging by the water. Based on their look, they had a very good winter. Take your truck up and keep an eye on your temperature gauge if it happens to be a very warm day. enjoy
