Suggestions for a day trip from Raleigh on Mothers Day

I am looking to take my mother out for the day this weekend. She enjoys a casual stroll through towns that have a pleasant atmosphere, shops to wander through, and nice restaurants. Extras would be a place that serves traditional afternoon tea or has a botanical garden. I would like to stay within 90 minutes of Raleigh, if possible. Does anyone know of some hidden gems? Thank you.

wilmington is only 2 hrs away, a bit further than what you posted but definatley doable for a day trip. They have everything you mentioned.

Pinehurst has a little village area with shops i believe, but have never been there.

Chapel Hill is a possibility as well.

A few suggestions off the top of my head:

The NC Zoo

Yadkin Valley winery tour (Raffaldini gets rave reviews, but there are many others)

Visit the downtown Winston-Salem arts district, then tour Old Salem, then dinner at the Old Salem Tavern

Chapel Hill--tour the NC Botanical Garden and campus gardens, then dinner on Franklin St.

The perfect fit for your Mother%26#39;s Day trip is to go to Fearrington Village. It%26#39;s picturesque and charming, has many little shops to browse through, lots of gardens and some restaurants that may fit the bill. To top it off, if you haven%26#39;t been to the Duke Gardens already, you could continue on to Durham and see them - they are spectacular! Getting to Fearrington Village takes about 30-40 minutes from Raleigh and Durham is about 10 miles from there (you can then circle back on I-40). Check out the Village website: http://www.fearrington.com/

Hope this helps!

Many thanks to everyone for your suggestions. I will look into these ideas because they seem to be exactly what I am looking for.
