Best route to OBX then on to D.C.

We are flying into NC to visit family in Fayetteville. After a short visit we will have 7 days to drive to the OBX then travel north through Virginia Beach and onto D.C., spend 2 days there then back to Raleigh to fly home. We are thinking of driving to Cedar Island and taking the ferry over to Ocracoke then driving up the coast. Would it better to take 64 to Roanoke island then go north from there. Thanks in advance for your help.

Definitely take the ferry. Otherwise, you%26#39;re missing a big chunk of the OBX.

I agree with taking the ferry but I must say its is time consuming and you will need to be there an hour before it sails.

food for though when heading north out of OBX take the Currytuck ferry over to Knots island on your way to Va beach a little less congested that way but again time consuming too.

Leaving Va beach to DC you might like going up 17 its a bit more picturesque I would get on it off of 64 at Fort Eustis, VA exit Rt 105 I think it is then head toward Fredericksburg to get on 95 again to DC

You know you can%26#39;t pass directly from the NC Outer Banks to the Va Outer bank? You can go, as the previous poster suggested, via Knott%26#39;s Island which would be a nice trip in itself.

What time of year are you going?

We are going at the end of May. Thank you for your advice.

PS, to make my post clearer, while I understand there%26#39;s renewed talks about a bridge or something between the mainland and Corolla area, and while there used to be a ferry in that area, the only way I know of to go between VB and the NC OBX is via the mainland eventually. The northern part just south of VB could include that ride from VB to Knott%26#39;s Island first and then the ferry to the NC mainland. Knott%26#39;s Island is a nice place to see.

This bridge, if ever built, will not be there for at least 10 years. They will likely never build it but who knows. Opening a route from VA to the Corova area makes more sense, but they need a new bridge over the inlet more than to Corolla.

I know they%26#39;ve been talking about it forever. And I understand the ferry that went from...where? Knott%26#39;s Island? to the Outer Banks was damaged in a storm and it was decided the water was too rough to bother about another ferry along there. We all want to hurry and get to that vacation:)
